Description

The second excavation master from the heavyweight Taper, who lives in the UK and is renowned as an authority on Eric Clapton’s sound sources, is a “master cassette” that recorded the first half of the Tempe, Arizona performance on July 18th, which was the middle of the 1974 US tour, when Clapton made a comeback from a three-year retirement due to drug addiction, in a mono soundboard recording. This soundboard source was recorded as a PA out for the engineer’s check at the concert venue, and is the same source as the one that was previously released on the Japanese paper jacket 1CD bootleg “Smiling Away”. However, this heavyweight master is only a “master cassette”, and one more song, Blues Power, which was not included on the previous release, was recorded. However, this Blues Power had a “reasonable” reason, and the sound of the mixing desk engineer fast-forwarding the tape (the so-called “cry sound”) frequently occurred during the singing and guitar parts. The six places were: 2:01, 2:49, 2:54, 3:24, 3:33, and 3:44. It is possible that the producer of the previously released version also obtained the master containing this Blues Power, but it cannot be denied that he heard this state and deliberately cut it. It was a song with that much damage. However, this time, our engineer, who has a reputation for adjusting and compensating for the difficult masters of many artists, once again showed his “magic skills”. The tempo was not disturbed and the damage was minimal at 2:01, but the other five places were all restored to a state where they could be listened to almost without stress by carefully working on matching the tempo of the performance, intentionally lowering the sound pressure at the relevant points to reduce the muddiness caused by the overlapping of the guitar sound, and cross-fading. The Blues Power that was actually being played. Clapton here also showed off a sharp play. It can be said that the value of this board is just to be able to listen to this song. Although this sound source is a master version, it was difficult to see the clear difference (improvement) in sound quality from the previously released version, but our engineer has alleviated the noise over multiple places that seemed to exist in all the leaked masters of the day. Therefore, it is clear that it is much easier to listen to than the previously released version. Speaking of the performance of the stage on this day, Clapton himself was quite intoxicated, so there were many mistones, and the performance play quality is somewhat low even in this tour, but the only one, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, is a rare version that starts with a shuffle, changes the tempo slowly in the middle, and in the second half, a twin lead guitar battle with second guitarist George Terry is developed, which lasts for 14 minutes. This take is also worth listening to. Now, let’s review what the performance of this day was in this comeback year.・June 19th and 20th, 1974: Warm-up gigs in Scandinavia for the US comeback tour ・June 28th to August 4th, 1974: US tour ←★Here★≪August 5th, 1974: Album “461 OCEAN BOULEVARD” released≫ ・August to September 1974: Album “THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD” recorded in Miami ・September 28th to October 6th, 1974: 2nd US tour ・October 31st to November 6th, 1974: First Japan tour ・November 27th to December 5th, 1974: European tour You can see that this performance was the middle date of Clapton’s comeback US tour, which began in June of that year, and was a gamble on his comeback. This US tour was a tour in which Clapton, who had decided to return to the live stage after a warm-up gig, got drunk to ease the tension of a long-awaited live stage. As a result, the intoxication can be seen even on the day of the main board, but the acoustic set at the beginning is relatively carefully performed and there are no unstable parts. At the Tempe performance, the sound was polished, the trouble parts were resolved and eased, and one song was added for the first time, making this the best quality and definitive version. This release is recommended for enthusiasts who already own the released version and are sure to buy it again.
