! We released the Mike Millard recording of Eric Clapton’s Laguna Hills performance on September 23, 1988, “Laguna Hills 1988: Mike Millard 1st Generation Cassettes,” in January 2021, but this time, a version re-recorded from the master with even higher sound quality has been uploaded online! The previous version was of course transferred by JEMS from the first generation cassette master, and boasted the high sound quality unique to Millerd tapes, but this version surpasses that. It is likely that an upgrade was realized in the digital transfer process that goes through several stages from the master cassette. However, the missing parts that occurred when switching the cassette from side A to side B and when switching to the second cassette due to the Millerd master remain as they are, so as with the previous version, our exclusive engineer has filled in the sound pressure from the previously released version and has beautifully corrected the high drop parts to create a complete version with no sense of incongruity (the ★ part in the song list). Therefore, it is a much better version that can be listened to in a better condition than the state of the net. In this respect, I think the advantage of this board is clear. [Representative sound source of the 25th anniversary debut celebration tour] Now, as for the performance on this day, let’s take a look at where it was positioned in the 25th anniversary debut tour that took place that year. – January 22nd to February 7th, 1988: UK tour including 9 consecutive performances at the Royal Albert Hall (Mark Knopfler participated) <April 18th, 1988: Anthology box set “CROSSROADS” released> – June 5th to 6th, 1988: Appeared with his own band at the “Prince’s Trust Concert” held at the Royal Albert Hall (Elton John participated) – June 8th to 9th, 1988: Rehearsal with Dire Straits at Brixton Academy – June 11th, 1988: “Nelson Mann” Appeared as a member of Dire Straits at the “Della 70th Birthday Concert”.・July 2, 1988: Appeared at the charity event “Picnic Concert” held in Surrey, England.・September 1 – October 8, 1988: US tour ←★HERE★・October 11, 1988: Made a surprise appearance at a Jack Bruce concert held at the Bottom Line club in New York.・October 31 – November 5, 1988: Japan tour.・November 28, 1988: Appeared at a charity event held at the Hard Rock Cafe in London. Performing on stage with Jeff Beck, Mitch Mitchell, and others December 23, 1988: Dropping in to participate in Gary Brooker’s Stiletto Shoes gig in Dunsfold, Surrey, UK It was a large-scale world tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his debut and to thank his fans for their long-term support along with the release of his anthology work. There were many topics, such as the early UK performances with the RAH series as the main focus, and the final Japan performance with guest musicians, but the US tour, which became a full-scale road, was the longest-running main event of the year. The performance date of this board was in the middle of that. Clapton was in top form that day. He played from the beginning, but especially after Badge, which ended with Can’t Find My Way Home featuring Nathan East, he played a series of amazing plays. It gives the impression that he was completely switched on. It is worth noting that Dire Straits’ leader and guitarist, Mark Knopfler, participated in this tour as a friend. White Room, I Shot The Sheriff, and Badge are great, with his unique melancholy and sad obbligatos, and you can also hear his band’s biggest hit, Money For Nothing, backed by the Clapton band. The set list was made up of masterpieces that represent his 25-year career. After Midnight, played with a strong groove of a remake arrangement that was dropped during the Japan tour, has outstanding stability, and Clapton’s play on the long original blues Same Old Blues, which exudes a bewitching atmosphere with a solo that makes heavy use of sustain and bend, gives me goosebumps. Clapton’s solo on Layla, which allows Knopfler to play that seven-phrase, is longer than any other in recent years! And it’s hot! The band’s potential is fully demonstrated throughout the entire album. It is also worth noting that the prologue to Layla during this period incorporated A Remark You Made, a song that Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul gave to his late friend Jaco Pastorius. This was realized at the request of bassist Nathan, who respects Jaco. The difference from the later Japan tour was that the percussionist at this time was not Ray Cooper, a former member of the Elton John band who later became a regular member, but Jodie Linscott, a leading British female percussionist (she was asked by Pete Townshend to participate in The Who’s reunion tour the following year). This was the only tour where she supported Clapton, despite having supported countless artists. Another point to listen to is the way she interacts with Steve Ferrone, who uses even more percussion instruments than Cooper. Laguna Hills was one of the most representative performances of the Celebrate US tour in 1988. The sound quality of the previously released version was excellent, but we hope you will enjoy the even more upgraded master by Millard on this version.
