Description
The Leicester performance on October 22, 1977 was the earliest stereo soundboard live performance of Elvis Costello & The Attractions, and boasts such superb sound quality that it could have been officially released as it was. In fact, a reel that was broadcast on the radio from that day still exists, and several songs from it were later released in small doses as bonus tracks on “THIS YEAR’S MODEL”. However, the actual recording is a superb sound source that captured the stage of the earliest Costello & The Attractions with a perfect stereo soundboard for the reasons mentioned above. In addition, the content is extremely valuable. At that time, Costello had just teamed up with The Attractions and his only album was his first album, “MY AIM IS TRUE”. There, he covered a rare set list that included “Whole Wide World” by Reckless Eric, who was also a label mate of Stiff, and even “Neat Neat Neat” by The Damned. In addition, in these performances, the band members of label mate Ian Dury joined in and played saxophone, giving a different atmosphere from the later Costello & Attractions stages, which is also valuable. Nevertheless, since the second album had not even been released yet, it was extremely rare to see “Dr. Luther’s Assistant” played live, which would see the light of day three years later as the B-side of a single. It is rare to hear this song performed live on such a perfect stereo soundboard. New songs for the second album “THIS YEAR’S MODEL” have already been performed, but all of them are incomplete arrangements, which reminds us that this is the Attractions just after they teamed up with Costello. The atmosphere is completely different from the many radio recordings produced from the US tour one month later, even in the same 1977 live performance, and it is full of the freshness that is unique to the early days of the band. Moreover, these performances and rare repertoires can be heard on a perfect stereo soundboard. It’s amazing that such a great sound quality and content live recording from 1977 by Costello & Attractions was overlooked. And the highlight is the opening Richard Hell cover “Love Comes In Spurts”. Listening to this aggressive performance, it’s no wonder that Costello was classified as a punk band at the time of his debut. In addition, this cover is a super rare scene that was performed only at this time. This performance can also be heard on the best stereo soundboard recording, so it’s a live recording that will make any enthusiast cry. We have released the best soundboards from Costello’s 1977 so far, but this one is the best in terms of content and sound quality!
