Description
In 1972, from the European tour that took place when the “Trilogy” was announced, Germany’s Essen performance on June 4th was almost completely recorded with a high-quality audience recording and appeared for the first time. Two types of sound sources from the day are used, Hoedown, Tarkus, Enigma and encore Rondo are super high quality takes, and Take A Pebble, Pictures is a good audience take. What is surprising is that the first half and last take are recorded, and the sound balance and separation are excellent, and it is a very good recording where you can clearly hear each note of the bass, and everything was recorded with this sound quality. If only I had! It’s the highest grade sound quality that you can’t help but think. The wonderful drum sound is especially worth mentioning, and the solo part is also very powerful. The new song Hoedown has a slightly stiff performance, but the following Tarkus has the best overall groove, and you can fully enjoy Greg’s passionate singing, Keith’s sharp organ play, and the ideal performance of ELP. can. The power of the synth in the middle of Mass is almost terrifying. The background drumming of Battlefield is also recorded clearly, so it’s a great listen. The new song “Eternal Mystery” is not a shout-type vocal like the latter half of the 1972 tour, but is sung relatively according to the melody of the album. You can listen to a neat performance, including the fugue, which I haven’t mastered live yet. Take A Pebble is recorded from the middle of the song. Lucky Man is a late performance with drums. What’s wonderful is the piano improvisation, which features phrases unique to this period. The ending arrangement is also a fun must-listen take. As mentioned above, this area and “Pictures at an Exhibition” have a slightly less direct sound image, but they are still recorded enough to be heard as an audience recording of this era. Rondo, a nearly 20-minute performance including a drum solo, is again recorded in high quality as on Disc 1. Unfortunately, the last part of Rondo fades due to a tape cut, but it is similar to Emerson’s frenzied organ play. It has become a listening place.
