Description
The highlight of the “WORKS TOUR” was a precious concert with an orchestra, of which only a limited number of records remain. This masterpiece live album is now available. The collaboration with the orchestra, which began with the album “WORKS VOLUME 1”, was a major project that realized Keith Emerson’s dream of a tour, while also changing the fate of EL&P. However, not all of the “WORKS TOUR” was with an orchestra, only a part of the tour. This work includes the “Detroit performance on May 31st + June 1st, 1977”. Speaking of live collaboration albums, the press album “DES MOINES 1977” is also very popular, but let’s start by checking the full picture of the orchestra collaboration. [1977] May 24th + 25th: Louisville (2 performances) May 29th: Cincinnati May 31st + June 1st: Detroit (2 performances) [This work] June 4th: Chicago June 5th: Milwaukee* June 7th: Indianapolis June 9th: Madison* June 11th: Minneapolis* June 12th: Des Moines “DES MOINES 1977” Approximately 15 performances in trio – July 7th-9th: New York (3 performances) * Approximately 30 performances in trio – August 26th: Montreal * Approximately 30 performances in trio – [1978] Approximately 45 performances in trio (no orchestra) – (* indicates performances confirmed in the recording) This is a rough outline of the “WORKS TOUR”. Although the records at that time are somewhat vague, there were 15 orchestral performances out of the 145 tours. Although it is not strict because there were trio performances between the concerts, the flow was roughly “Orchestral Performance 11 → Trio 15 → Orchestral Performance 3 → Trio 30 → Orchestral Performance 1 → Trio 80”. The Detroit performance of this work is the 4th-5th concert of the early orchestra performances. The quality of this work is a truly wonderful audience sound. After all, the master of this work was announced by the prestigious “JEMS”. It is different from the audience recordings there and there. First of all, “May 31st (Disc 1-2)”, the beautiful vintage sound is completely unrelated to listening discomfort. There is no sound distortion or noise, and the orchestra sound fills the venue with a sense of scale from the opening “Abaddon’s Bolero” feels real. Speaking of live performances with an orchestra, the official “WORKS LIVE” and “WORKS ORCHESTRAL TOUR 77” come to mind, but unfortunately they are not the whole picture of the show. In the midst of all this, “May 31st (Disc 1-2)” is a great sound source that allows you to fully enjoy the show with JEMS sound. Instead, “June 1st (Disc 3-4)” is also wonderful! There are some parts in “Lucky Man” and “Tank” that sound like a slight microphone noise, but the basic recording is a clear sound of press class. Especially delicious is “From The Beginning”, and the orchestra co-performance of this song is a rare version that is not even a chopped official. You can listen to it with high quality sound of press class! Even more wonderful is “Pirates”. The orchestra co-performance version of this song is also an official video, but it is as clear as that, but it is also full of the scale unique to audience recording. It is truly a JEMS master to be able to listen to such an emotional version. Unfortunately, “June 1st (Disc 3-4)” is not a complete recording, with the opening “Abaddon’s Bolero” cut in and the final “Rondo” faded out. Furthermore, the middle “Pictures At An Exhibition” and “C’est la Vie” are also missing. What a pity! … So, this is a masterpiece of a live album that allows you to be present at a historic orchestra concert and immerse yourself in a magnificent and beautiful world of sound. A 4-disc master set unearthed by the prestigious “JEMS”. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content. Cobo Arena, Detroit, MI.
