Description
The 1977 orchestral tour that was made possible by Keith Emerson’s tenacity and changed the fate of EL&P. A traditional professional shot that conveys the scene is now available. This work was filmed at “Montreal Performance on August 26, 1977”. This is an out-of-print official multi-camera pro shot that has long symbolized “WORKS TOUR” and has also been used as the video version of the live albums “IN CONCERT” and “WORKS LIVE.” This video has been a classic since the VHS era, and was released on DVD in 2002. This work is a two-disc set with the original version, which is a detailed reprint of the highest peak master, on disk 1, and the re-edited version according to the actual show on disk 2. Generally, “WORKS TOUR” is famous as a tour accompanied by an orchestra, but in reality there were many performances with just a trio. First, let’s look back at the actual situation and confirm the show’s position. 1977, May 24th – June 12th: Orchestra co-starring (11 performances + 2 trio performances) 《June 16th – July 5th: Trio 15 performances》 ・July 7th – 9th: Orchestra co-starring ( MSG 3 performances)《July 10th-August 23rd: Trio 34 performances》・August 26th: Orchestra co-starring (Montreal) ←★This work★《October 15th-November 30th: Trio 35 performances》1978 [January 16th – March 13th: 48 trio performances] This is EL&P in 1977/1978. There are many ambiguous points in the records from that time, so I can’t give you the exact number of performances, but I think you can understand the general flow/scale. The shows of “orchestra co-starring” and “trio performances” are quite a complicated mix, but most of them are “trio”. While over 130 performances were “trio performances,” only about 15 were “orchestra performances.” The valuable “orchestra co-starring” is also divided into three major groups, with most concentrated in May/June at the beginning of the tour. After that, it was only the three consecutive performances of MSG in New York and the Montreal performance of this work. This work, which was recorded in such a final “co-starring orchestra”, is truly a traditional masterpiece. It has been used in various history videos, so I think many people have seen parts of it, but the long version was long ago discontinued in 2002. Nowadays, even used cars come with a premium of tens of thousands of yen. This work is a DVD version of the best version. Although the slightly dark screen and film texture remain the same as they were back then, you can enjoy the spectacle of an orchestra co-starring concert that fills a huge stadium with beautiful images without noise or deterioration. Disc 1, which is exactly as the original video is, is also nostalgic, but the best part of this work is Disc 2, which has been re-edited in the order of the songs. There is also an official live album “WORKS LIVE” which is an extended version of “IN CONCERT”, but it is not based on the actual show and is also mixed from the trio performance. This is a good opportunity, so let’s check out the actual set from the Montreal performance. Abaddon’s Bolero Hoedown [Not included] Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression, Part 2 The Enemy God Tarkus [Not included] C’est la vie Lucky Man Pictures at an Exhibition Piano Concerto No. 1, First Movement [Not included] Piano Concerto, 3rd Movement Closer to Believing [Not included] Knife-Edge [Not included] Tank Nutrocker Pirates Fanfare for the Common Man/Rondo …and so it goes like this. This work is based on existing footage, so it is not a complete version of the show, but you can understand that the original version has been rearranged quite dramatically. Of course, Disc 2 of this work is also carefully edited rather than cut into pieces, and you can enjoy the show naturally as if it had been this specification from the beginning. “The Enemy God,” “C’est la vie,” “Piano Concerto,” and “Tank” performed with the orchestra are also wonderful, but the highlight is “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Although it can be said to be a throwback to classical music, it also has great affinity with orchestras. And the highlight is “Pirates” and “Fanfare For The Common Man”. In particular, “Pirates” has continued to be the highlight of the video version as a masterpiece that could not be heard even on “WORKS LIVE”, but these two songs are also the band side (D side) of the “ELP tetralogy” itself. It is complete only when accompanied by an orchestra, and you can fully enjoy the magnificent world that concentrates the significance of co-starring tours. A grand orchestra co-starring concert that progresses rock in the EL&P style. This is a video masterpiece that allows you to enjoy the show that crystallizes the dreams and ambitions of the rare genius Keith Emerson with multi-camera professional shots. Originally, it should have been possible to excavate the complete version or re-enact it over the long history, but in reality, even the original video has been discontinued. A two-disc set where you can enjoy the original version and the re-edited version of such tragic footage.
