Description

This is a recording of the ELP special feature of the radio program. The program was “Young Jockey,” which was extremely popular among Western music fans at the time. Just by hearing the name, many people may imagine their own room 40 years ago. In 1977, the popular “Young Jockey” DJ traveled to New York to create a special series called “New York Report,” which broadcast concert reports and interviews with various bands. This work is the ELP edition on the second night (air date is August 9th). The sound quality is of course perfect. Even in “New York Report”, which had a total of 7 episodes in one week, ELP was the only band that used the entire 1 episode. This shows just how hugely popular ELP was. The concert reported here is “July 7, 1977”, the first day of three consecutive performances at Madison Square Garden. He also talks about his impressions of witnessing the historic orchestral performance during the first WORKS tour accompanied by an orchestra. The program consists of songs from records and DJ talk playing alternately, but what is played in the background of the talk is a self-bootleg recorded live by the DJ himself! It’s so typical of the 70’s that they would do something like this. Although it is a part of “Tarkus” and “Still You Turn Me On”, it is extremely valuable!!The highlight of the program is the interview with Greg Lake in the second half. The anecdote from the interview was interesting, and while I was thinking, “It’s amazing that NH○ gave the OK over other European media,” the answer I received was, “It’s OK with Karl.” The irritated DJ apparently gave up and said, “That doesn’t make any sense. Give it to Greg!” Furthermore, when you are taken to the dressing room, it is like a cabaret in the countryside. “Greg is grinning as he seduces women, surrounded by blue lighting, a fluffy carpet, and rows of alcoholic beverages. It was just Greg Lake.”There are many stories that can’t be heard anywhere else. It’s coming. Then, when the interview began, things suddenly took a turn for the worse. Greg is confused by the DJ’s questions about Crimson, and ends up getting angry. It’s such an amazing part, so let’s write it down. -Why don’t they sing Epitaph at the end of Tarkus? Greg: (What’s that question?) There are too many songs, and we have to do a lot of different songs in a limited amount of time. I don’t have time to play those old songs from the Crimson era. -Does the sentiment of the words “Confusion will be my epitaph” still form the basis of your songs? Greg: (Again, wondering what the question is) They’re written by the same person, so they’re probably the same. -About Robert Fripp…. Greg: (disgusted) That was so long ago, I don’t remember. In fact, Robert was at the venue yesterday (!?). Aren’t you coming today too? -About Pete Sinfield. Greg: He’s a really nice guy and we have a really good songwriter relationship. he is good …And you guys, (coolly and angrily) I’m not going to answer King Crimson’s questions anymore. That was already 7 years ago, right? At this point, DJ senses Greg’s nervous mood and changes his questions to ELP-related questions. Greg also corrects his mood and responds, but this time it’s not a boring joke, but a very interesting one. I can’t write everything here, so I’ll just write down some questions. [DJ’s question] – What did the three years of silence bring you? -Why is the cover of “Works” all black? -About your role as a producer. -Did you really plan to form a group with Jimi Hendrix? – On the similarities between Keith Emerson and Jimi Hendrix. -Why do you collaborate with Pete Sinfield so much? – Why is the solo section of “Works” biased toward acoustic music? -The core of ELP, Keith and Greg, seem to have completely different personalities, but how do you control that as a producer? -I think your songs are about the feeling of loneliness in humans, but do you think it will come true when you release that feeling of loneliness itself? -What do you think about the role of music in the fight against human loneliness? …Now, what is Greg’s answer? Please confirm it with your own ears. Live Report: Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY. USA 7th July 1977 Broadcast Date: 9th August 1977 (60:08) 1. DJ Intro 2. Hoedown * 3. DJ Talk 4.
