Description
Introducing the ultimate live album of the final period of the reorganized EL&P, written with the original master. This work contains the “August 22, 1998 Tinley Park performance”. This is an original recording only for this work, using a DAT master given to us by the recordist who went to the scene. The reorganization of EL&P has been carried out intermittently since 1992. It may be difficult to imagine it as the “final period”, so let’s take a quick look back at the overview of their activities. {June 1992: Release of “BLACK MOON”} 1992: 34 shows in North America + 8 shows in Japan + 42 shows in Europe 1993: 52 shows in North America + 9 shows in South America {September 1994: Release of “IN THE HOT SEAT”} – 2 years later – 1996: 33 shows in North America + 10 shows in Japan – 1997: 24 shows in North America + 21 shows in Europe + 13 shows in South America – 1998: 21 shows in North America ←★Here★ – 12 years later – 2010: HIGH VOLTAGE (1 show) Above, 2 original albums and a total of 268 shows. This is an overview of the reorganized EL&P. Aside from “HIGH VOLTAGE 2010,” which had a 12-year hiatus, 1998, which is included in this work, was the final period of the reorganization activities. This is a live album that is the 7th to the last of the 21 shows on the final North American tour. This work was a coupling tour with DEEP PURPLE & DREAM THEATER, so it fits on one disc, but the quality is extremely clear and superb. In fact, it was once released as “PROG HEROES”, but it was highly praised as “complete soundboard class” and “best recording of 1998!” This work is not a copy, but a CD re-release from the original DAT. The slight noise seen in several places in the second half has been beautifully treated to make this the decisive board. In fact, the sound of this work is extremely beautiful. Although the equipment had evolved in the late 1990s, it still has a tremendously clear sound that far surpasses the standards of the time. The vivid applause between songs tells us that it is an audience recording, but if it had not been given to us by the recordist himself, we would have thought, “Did you mix the finished product with a sound board that leaks from the desk?” Even the explosion sound of the ribbon controller that bursts in “Hoedown” is super vivid. The wonderfulness of EL&P’s final stage, depicted by such a sound. I don’t mean to say anything bad about “HIGH VOLTAGE 2010” 12 years later, but EL&P in this work has an overwhelming feeling of being active. Both Keith and Greg are in their early 50s and are still in their prime as performers. Although it is different from the wildness of their 20s and 30s, they know how to bring out the dynamism of the songs to the fullest, and they deliver a huge spectacle that would be disrespectful to call it “mature”. Furthermore, the set list and arrangements are full of the flavor that is unique to the “final stage”. For example, in “Karn Evil 9”, the song melody and the main part of the middle part are forcibly attached, and “Tarkus”, which was often shortened to “Pictures at an Exhibition” during the reorganization period, is not skipped, and the end SE of “Brain Reform” is inserted at the end of the main part. The “Piano Concerto”, which has been revived for the first time in a long time, is also amazing. This is a masterpiece that explodes with Emerson’s determination and aesthetics, creating a wonderful drama even without an orchestra, with only one piano. And above all, the cover of KING CRIMSON’s “21st Century Psychopath”! Although they started playing it on the 1997 tour, it is a super masterpiece that could not be heard in the official works “LIVE IN POLAND” and “LIVE AT MONTREUX 1997”. It is a medley that continues with “Fanfare For the Common Man”, and it is nonsense to compare the keyboard trio version with the original. However, you can listen to this precious live performance with the best sound of a soundboard (and the joy of the audience is also fun). Nine days later, EL&P, who performed the final performance of the tour, went to sleep again. Although they had only reunited once in 2010, this was the last time EL&P was active as a regular rock band. To be honest, when this recording first appeared, no one thought it would be the last tour, and people tended to think, “They’ll do it again anyway.” However, this was the last. This is a piece that condenses the last brilliance of EL&P. Now that we have lost Keith and Greg, this is a piece that we want you to enjoy and look back on. For those who want to end 2016 with EL&P.
