Description

1970 was the year of ultimate brilliance in the long history of DEEP PURPLE. A new masterpiece with the highest audience sound of that time is here! Around the time of the release of “IN ROCK”, DEEP PURPLE in 1970 continued to perform live energetically since the end of the previous year. They toured Europe for the entire period except for a period in the summer, and were solidifying their presence as a hard rock band representing the UK. This work is a complete recording of the Croydon performance on November 22nd from the opening to the encore, from a live performance in the UK where PURPLE booked three performances prior to the start of the German tour at the end of November of the same year, when PURPLE was at the peak of their motivation, performance ability and energy. Several sound sources of this Croydon performance have been circulating for some time, but this title is based on a higher-level master that was obtained independently. The prospect of the performance and the clear outline from the material stage are undoubtedly top class for an audience recording from more than 40 years ago, and it was already surprising that such a master had been preserved until now. This excellent master has been carefully treated, and the work has a properly adjusted pitch and a more listenable sound, so it will be considered by fans of the day as the definitive version, regardless of whether it is a pre-release or internet-derived sound source. The venue was filled with an outstanding atmosphere even before the show started, and the applause of the audience made us feel the high expectations for the band. In addition to Ian Gillan’s MC, the members are also recorded checking the sound of each instrument as if they were warming up, which naturally makes the listeners feel excited. Following the members’ sound check, you can’t miss Gillan singing “Yodel”, which is unique to this time of year, accompanied by Jon Lord. The show gets off to an explosive start with track 3, “Speed King”. The live performance has just begun, but the high-tension performance that makes the needle swing to the peak is overwhelming. Richie’s guitar, which sounds like an explosion, Gillan, who overpowers others with his superhuman screams, and the exchange of interplay between John, Pace, and Roger are so intense that they are speechless, and the performance suddenly exceeds 10 minutes. The following “Into The Fire” is literally a swirling heat as if jumping into a fire, and John’s heavy Hammond, which sounds like a heavy tune, creates an irresistible richness by unifying with Richie’s guitar. Among the performances that are like listening to all the songs, the climax of the first half is the band’s spectacular improvisation unfolding in “Child In Time”. Richie’s play from around 4:10 is truly frenzy, and John, inspired by it, responds with a torrent of intense sound from around 5:45. The 17 minutes of storm-like passages, where you are drawn in and overwhelmed by the performance, pass by in the blink of an eye! The next song, “Wring That Neck,” is filled with wonderful improvisation and interplay, just like the previous song, although the angle of approach is slightly different. Here, John’s plump Hammond tone is exquisite, and the sense of color reminiscent of the first period vividly colors the middle part of the live. Tracks 1 to 3 of disc 2 are covers of “Paint It Black,” featuring Pace’s drum solo that lasts more than 7 minutes. This song was also featured on the ’93 “25th Anniversary Tour of the Band’s Formation,” but at that time it was an instrumental arrangement without singing, which was one of the characteristics of the ’70 tour. The last song of the main set, “Black Night,” features Gillan’s vocals in the middle to latter half of the song, which are simply amazing, and show off his superhuman ability to compete with Richie’s guitar and not back down one step. The encore features rock and roll covers of “Lucille” and “Good Golly Miss Molly.” The former is a more relaxed impression compared to the ’72 performance, but the latter, which flows like a medley, has a much faster tempo, with a superb driving feeling and a destructive roar that knocks out the listeners and concludes the live show. Since many of the PURPLE live shows from that time have not only cuts between songs but also missing songs themselves, this recording, which contains the entire show, can be said to be a very important and valuable one in terms of both materials and entertainment. It will be an indispensable recording for fans to elucidate the live show in the fall of ’70, which still has many unknowns! In addition, as bonus tracks, this work includes special recordings of “Paint It Black” and “Mandrake Root” recorded by a Japanese taper who lived in Dusseldorf, Germany at the time from the performance on June 1, 1970. These two songs are audience sources that first appeared on the masterpiece “THE MEPHISTO WALTZ” that shocked fans, and you can enjoy them with a clarity that you wouldn’t expect from a recording more than 40 years ago, and a direct sound that seems right in front of you! In particular, Richie’s long solo, which can be heard on “Mandrake Root”, which is not included in the main story, is simply overwhelming. The spectacular performance, which spreads with a vivid texture and powerful sound pressure, makes you feel the beauty of order and collapse side by side, and makes you realize once again how amazing Richie is when he is “devoted to the music he wants to make”! Currently, “THE MEPHISTO WALTZ” is out of print, and the opportunity to hear this best play has been lost for a long time, so its reappearance in this work is big news. Of course, the sound quality has been improved by remastering, making it a must-listen take for everyone. This work, which fully captures the incredible destructive power, fun of improvisation and the joy of interplay that DEEP PURPLE boasted at that time, will surely captivate not only PURPLE fans but all hard rock fans around the world! Please enjoy the ultimate two hours of one of the best live bands in the era when rock was really hot! Live at Fairfield Hall, Croydon, London, UK 22nd November 1970 AMAZING SOUNDDisc 1 1.
