Description
After the departure of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, the third season of DEEP PURPLE started with the then unknown newcomer David Coverdale and former TRAPEZE member Glenn Hughes, completing “BURN” at the end of 1973. (Released in early ’74). In addition to warming up the band as a whole, they also started their live activities on a short European tour that began in December of the same year, with the purpose of getting the inexperienced Coverdale accustomed to the PURPLE stage. The dates have been booked over the year-end and New Year holidays, and after the New Year’s break, the band will restart with a performance in Paris, France on January 20th. A total of 10 performances (including 5 in January 1974) will be held until the performance in Dusseldorf, Germany on the 26th. The stage in Stuttgart included in this work is the fourth performance in 1974. Due to the condition of the master, the sound image may become slightly unstable in some scenes, but this has been corrected as much as possible in the remastering process of making it into a disc, and it is clearly easier to listen to than the source known among traders. The sound has improved (of course the pitch is also normal). From the opening “Burn”, you can check the performance with a certain brightness as a whole, and in particular, Richie’s guitar has a clear tone from the beginning, solo and backing. Coverdale’s performance has improved since December 1973, just after the tour started, and he will be able to listen to his unique songs. Glenn’s chorus is also close to the album (as exemplified by “Burn”), and the band performs cohesively. The set list has already solidified at this point, and the familiar numbers “Might Just Take Your Life”, “Lay Down Stay Down” and “Mistreated” continue. You can see that they are already preparing for their American tour (more specifically, California Jam on April 6th). At the moment Richie’s free solo changed to the riff of “Smoke On The Water,” the clapping and peaceful mood of the venue quickly turned into cheers and enthusiasm. This excitement will be a big listening point in this recording. Glenn’s unique singing and shouting, and Jon Lord’s organ are also very impressive. “You Fool No One” is a passionate performance that lasts over 13 minutes, with Richie’s solo in between. It can be said to be the highlight of the live performance. Unfortunately, the recording of “Space Truckin'” ends after just over 3 minutes (probably due to the tape running out), but this recording, which lasts just under 60 minutes, captures the precious live performance from early 1974, with good brightness and balance. It will entertain you. Many sound sources of the third generation PURPLE’s live performances are known since the American tour in March 1974. Regarding the UK tour from April to May, valuable takes are also being discovered, such as the Sheffield performance at “BURN IN SHEFFIELD”, which also included the encore at that time. However, the value of this work, which recorded a live performance in early ’74, can be said to be as valuable as those.
