Description

From the 1987 tour accompanying the release of DEEP PURPLE’s “THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT,” the second half of the first leg of the European tour, the performance in Stockholm, Sweden on February 27th, will be released as a 2-CD set using a newly discovered high-quality audience master. This live performance has traditionally been known for its standard recording, but this work uses a master provided by an overseas collector. With a superior sound that surpasses the previously released recordings, you can enjoy the live performance, including the happenings. After the release of “THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT,” DEEP PURPLE started their tour with three consecutive performances in Budapest, Hungary from January 27th to 29th, 1987. After that, they toured various European countries, including Germany, throughout February. At the end of the tour, from February 25th to 28th, they will perform three performances in various cities in Sweden, concluding their tour on the European continent for the time being. This work records the Stockholm performance on February 27th, the second day of the three Swedish performances. As mentioned above, there have been audience recordings of this live performance that have been considered standard for some time. Among them, “THE WILD WITHOUT RITCHIE”, which was recorded using a master in excellent condition, pleased many fans. This recording is based on a completely new excavated audience master that is different from the previous one, and after careful remastering and filling in the missing parts mainly in the encore part (using the master of the previously released “THE WILD WITHOUT RITCHIE”), it was made into a press CD. It has achieved a quality that can be said to be worthy of being the definitive version of the audience recording on the same day. From the opening of the live, the brightness and clarity should convince the listener of the master quality. The excitement of the venue is also captured on-line, but the direct feeling of the musical tone is wonderful, and it is not difficult to hear the performance or the song. The second period numbers such as “Highway Star”, “Strange Kind Of Woman”, and “Child In Time”, which are played with a soundboard-class balance and closeness of sound, are very powerful and will surely knock out the listeners. Gillan’s vocals are decent, but Richie, John, Pace and Roger will play shiningly at various points in the live. At this time, the members’ communication is still maintained, and the listeners will enjoy a thrilling show that does not let their guard down for a moment. “Perfect Strangers” and “Knocking At Your Backdoor”, which were chosen from the songs after the reunion, have a presence that is not inferior to the masterpieces of the second period, and will liven up the highlights of the live. In addition, the “THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT” number, which has not been played except in this ’87 live, is also a big listening point. All three songs fit surprisingly well into the set, with “Dead Or Alive” and “Hard Lovin’ Woman” being particularly satisfying to listen to. Richie also seemed to be in a good mood until the second half of the show, “Difficult To Cure” and “Lazy,” and Gillan and the other members also played a fun performance. However, for some reason, Richie left the stage in the second half of “Black Night,” and the main set of the show ended without any reaction (one theory is that Richie refused to play because “the quality of the audience was not good.” It is not clear, but there may have been an audience member who upset Richie during the performance of “Black Night”). In the encore, which began with a huge cheer, Gillan first explained Richie’s absence, and the four of them continued the live from the improvisation-like “She’s All Right” to “Smoke On The Water” (note that the new master was missing from the latter half of “Black Night” to “She’s All Right”, so these were compensated for from the master of “THE WILD WITHOUT RITCHIE”). In the end, Richie refused the encore, so the four of them played together, and this scene is one of the best listening spots in the live performance that year. “Call Of The Wild”, which explored a catchy direction even in the album, is a rare selection. Furthermore, it will be a performance without Richie, so fans will definitely not miss it. The last “Smoke On The Water” is also a must-listen part as a John-led “organ version”. It is said that Richie was angry that the band played with a four-person lineup without a guitar at this time. Considering the relationship between Richie and Gillan, which had been deteriorating since the production of “THE HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT,” this incident was a major incident that was a “foreshadowing” of Gillan’s firing in 1989 and Richie’s departure in 1993. The high tension performance until the middle of the live, the encore part without a guitar, and the one-of-a-kind live performance are both worth listening to as a document and as entertainment. This recording, which contains a 105-minute live performance with the best sound ever, is a must-listen for all DEEP PURPLE fans to collect!
