Description

The second installment of Bowie’s superb archive series “DBAS”. Following the first album, which is a compilation of teenagers, is the phantom official album that has been shelved. “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972” is a compilation of BBC sessions from the 60’s and 70’s. Speaking of Bowie’s early BBC, the official work “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” comes to mind, but of course this work is different. In fact, there was a similar BBC archive plan in 1996, and a sample version of it, “BBC SESSIONS 1969–1972 (Sampler),” was even released. However, the release was canceled due to licensing issues. It was shelved. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” was released four years later, but the content was actually different. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” was the best compilation selected from each session, but when you look at the songs that were released as planned, “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972” was a complete recording session. Moreover, the sound was even more different. The sound quality is different between the sample version mentioned above and “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”, and the sample version had better sound even if it was the same take. Therefore, maniacs around the world were longing for the original “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972” that was originally supposed to be released. Yes, that is this work. It has a more natural sound than “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”, and it is a definitive edition that records each session in complete form. However, this work is only an official work that has been shelved, and is not a complete version of the BBC session. This is a good opportunity to take a look at all 12 BBC sessions from the 60’s and 70’s in which Bowie appeared. ・December 18, 1967: TOP GEAR (5 songs)・May 13, 1968: JOHN PEEL IN TOP GEAR (5 songs)・October 20, 1969: D.L.T. SHOW (3 songs + α)・1970 2 March 5th: THE SUNDAY SHOW (15 songs) ●March 25, 1970: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (4 songs) ●June 3, 1971: IN CONCERT (9 songs) ●September 21, 1971: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (6 songs)・January 11, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (4 songs)●January 18, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (5 songs)●May 16, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (5 songs) ●May 22, 1972: JOHNNIE WALKER LUNCHTIME SHOW (4 songs) ●May 23, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s (4 songs) *Note: The date is the recording date, not the broadcast date. The special program “STAR SPECIAL” for which he served as a DJ in 1979 is omitted. These are the BBC appearances up to the 1970s, and the sessions marked with a “●” are included in this work. Eight of the 12 episodes are completely recorded. Until 1972, but after that he did not appear until the 1990s. The official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” includes (partially) “May 13, 1968” and “February 5, 1970” which are not included in this work, so it is an expanded version of “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”. ”, but all the sessions recorded in this work are complete versions. Therefore, this work is longer and more detailed in terms of time and number of songs. Now, let’s introduce the 8 sessions included in this work. [Disc 1: October 20, 1969: D.L.T. SHOW] The first to appear is “DAVE LEE TRAVIS SHOW”, which appeared just before the release of “Space Oddity”. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” also included two songs, “Let Me Sleep Beside You” and “Janine,” but this work includes even more of the extremely rare “Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed,” and the famous host Brian・An interview with Matthew is also included. As a matter of fact, there was no interview in “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972” scheduled for official release, but this work is added from the transcription disc of “TOP OF THE POPS”. We have realized the complete version of the broadcast. ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded take interview, “Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed” [Disc 1: March 25, 1970: SOUNDS OF THE 70s] Met allies Mick Ronson and Tony Visconti, and formed THE HYPE session in the background. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” only had one song, “The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud,” but this is a complete version of 4 songs, which has been significantly increased. Just before the production of “The Man Who Sold the World,” we were already playing early versions of “The Width Of A Circle” and “The Supermen.” “The Supermen” is a take that was cut from the broadcast. Although it was not scheduled to be included in the official release version of “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972,” it has been additionally recorded in this work, making it a complete session. Moreover, this is also an official track. This is the highest take that was only included in the 4-disc analog version of “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”. ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded takes “I’m Waiting For The Man” “The Width Of A Circle” “The Supermen (unaired)” [Disc 1: June 3, 1971: IN CONCERT] 3 The final song is “IN CONCERT” by John Peel, who appeared just before the production of “Hunky Dory”. It is a large-scale work that performs 9 songs all at once, and is a complete version with 4 more songs than “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”. Moreover, this broadcast is a treasure trove of extremely rare songs. Not only “Looking For A Friend,” “Kooks,” and “Song For Bob Dylan,” which premiered, but also three songs, “Bombers,” “Almost Grown,” and “It Ain’t Easy,” were so intense that only this broadcast is recorded. This is a rare performance. However, not all songs are sung by Bowie, and he performs with various guests while backing members of THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. “Almost Grown” is performed by Jeffrey Alexander, “Song For Bob Dylan” is performed by George Underwood, and “Andy Warhol” is performed by Dana Gillespie on lead vocals. “It Ain’t Easy” is a take of Bowie → Jeffrey → George singing around. ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded takes “Queen Bitch” “The Supermen” “Song For Bob Dylan” “Andy Warhol” [Disc 1-2: September 21, 1971: SOUNDS OF THE 70s] Finally “Ziggy”・Stardust” production was just around the corner in September 1971. This is “SOUNDS OF THE 70s” by Bob Harris, who performed as a duo with Mick Ronson. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” had 2 songs, but this work has 6 songs, triple the number. Moreover, two songs are unaired takes. In both cases, the simple ensemble of just two people is wonderful and touches the heart, and “Eight Line Poem”, which premiered on this day, will also be performed as a medley with “Oh! You Pretty Things.” The first three songs are divided into Disc 1 and the second half three songs are divided into Disc 2, but since each song is a studio session that is neatly divided, there is no sense of incongruity. “BBC SESSIONS 1969-1972”, which was originally supposed to be released, was a 3-CD set, but that was because this session was recorded without being separated. In this work, all the songs are recorded without leaking (in fact, 2 takes have been increased). ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded takes “Kooks” “Fill Your Heart” “Amsterdam (unaired)” “Andy Warhol (unaired)” [Disc 2: January 18, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s] [Disc 2: May 16, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s] [Disc 2: May 22, 1972: JOHNNIE WALKER LUNCHTIME SHOW] Next are 3 sessions from the final stage of production of “Ziggy Stardust” to just before its release. (14 songs). All of them are familiar songs from “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”, and there are no additional songs. However, the sound is different. “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” was also of official quality and I did not feel it was lacking, but the sound of this work is more natural. If you compare it, you can feel the distortion in the official version (perhaps due to mastering), and this work is much more beautiful. This is the “real sound” that enthusiasts all over the world have been looking for. And since it was around the time “Ziggy Stardust” was completed, the performance was in the world of that famous album. The members of THE SPIDERS FROM MARS are backing (Nick Graham also participated in the May session), and famous songs such as “Hang On To Yourself”, “Ziggy Stardust”, “Moonage Daydream”, “Suffragette City”, and “Starman” are finally here. . None of these are first performances, but you can hear fresh performances from the second and third performances. ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded takes: None [Disc 2: May 23, 1972: SOUNDS OF THE 70s] The last BBC session of the 70s was also the night before the release of “Ziggy Stardust”. This is Bob Harris’ “SOUNDS OF THE 70s” which was recorded consecutively the day after “JOHNNIE WALKER LUNCHTIME SHOW” above. These three songs were also heard in “BOWIE AT THE BEEB”, but this work is a complete session version that also includes “White Light / White Heat”. “Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide” also appears, and you can also enjoy the rare “Lady Stardust”. As it is close to the above session, the members are THE SPIDERS FROM MARS + Nick Graham. ★Official “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” unrecorded take “White Light / White Heat” This is a treasure collection of 2 hours and 30 minutes and 41 takes. A fantastic official album that includes a sound that surpasses “BOWIE AT THE BEEB” and a complete compilation of each session. The first installment of “DBAS”, “1964/66 THE BIG ATTRACTION”, was too early and a little manic, but this work is the super golden period up to “Ziggy Stardust”. This is a cultural heritage-level masterpiece that I would like to recommend not only to enthusiasts/collectors but to everyone. Ultimate Archive Series STEREO SBD Disc 1 (76:53) D.L.T.
