Description
The hidden area of Bowie’s history where he awakened to soul music, “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR”. A new excavation of the finest live album that conveys the truth. This work contains “Philadelphia performance on November 18, 1974”. When you think of Bowie in 1974, the first thing that comes to mind is the official live album “DAVID LIVE”. The official version is famous as “Philadelphia performance in 1974”, but this work is a completely different performance. It is a scene from “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR”, which was the final stage of “DIAMOND DOGS TOUR”. First, let’s briefly review the flow of the time. {May: “DIAMOND DOGS” released} “DIAMOND DOGS TOUR” June 14th – July 20th: North America #1 (31 shows) *Official release {August: “YOUNG AMERICANS” production begins} September 2nd – 16th: North America #2 (12 shows) “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR” October 5th – December 1st: North America #3 (30 shows) ←★Here★ This is the live schedule for “DIAMOND DOGS.” Although the “DIAMOND DOGS TOUR” was entirely North American, it was broadly divided into three legs, with only “North America #3” also known as “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR.” Although it is a Philadelphia performance, the official version “DAVID LIVE” is the early “North America # 1”, and this work is the final “North America # 3” (Note: Strictly speaking, “DAVID LIVE” was recorded in Upper Darby, not Philadelphia. This town is adjacent to Philadelphia and is often confused. It is similar to how Kawasaki City is thought to be Tokyo or Machida City is treated as Kanagawa Prefecture.) In addition, this “North America # 3” has a new tour name, and the content is different from “North America # 1-2”. “North America # 1” was a show that conveyed the scent of “DIAMOND DOGS” to the stage, but after that, he started working on “YOUNG AMERICANS”. Bowie, who welcomed Carlos Alomar here, rapidly leaned towards soul music. He made a bold change of direction, throwing away the huge stage set that was said to be the largest at the time. Then, after “North America #2”, the inclination towards soul accelerated, and we entered the changed “North America #3”. This work is a newly excavated audience recording that jumped out from such “North America #3”. It is surprising just to have a new excavation in 2017, but what is even more shocking is the sound. Although it is an audience recording, the terribly clear and direct musical sound is almost soundboard class. It is a shocking recording with a thick and meaty performance and singing voice, and almost no audience noise. Maniacs all over the world are shocked by this appearance. At this moment, one by one, maniacs are jumping on it, and they are in the midst of trembling with the wonderfulness. Such a hot topic new sound source is a bit confused by its overheating, but this work used the best master. Our shop is always supervised by the world authority of Bowie research, and this time, the researcher scrutinized it. There are also masters on the Internet that have the official “DAVID LIVE” “Cracked Actor” connected to them, but this work does not have such fakes. In addition, this work has been meticulously mastered. The left and right stereo balance, which was out of whack in the original sound source, has been adjusted, and the pitch of “Rebel Rebel”, which was slightly low, has been accurately corrected. This is the best album that has been made with the utmost care. Of course, there is no uncouth imitating anything that would spoil the beautiful “sound” of the newly excavated sound source. The best album of the newly excavated sound source that has been completed in this way flows beautifully with the sound world unique to “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR”, which has changed from “DAVID LIVE”. First of all, the band is different. Mike Garson and Earl Slick continue to participate from “DIAMOND DOGS”, but the rhythm section has been replaced by Willie Weeks and Dennis Davis, including Carlos, and many members of “YOUNG AMERICANS” such as Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, and Luther Vandross also participate in the backing vocals. It is a big ensemble of 14 people in total. The set that such members play is also different. In addition to “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again)”, “Sorrow”, and “Footstompin'”, which cannot be heard on the official release, new songs from “YOUNG AMERICANS” that were already in production, “Can You Hear Me”, “Young Americans”, and “Somebody Up There Likes Me” are already being performed. Even the past repertoire has a funky finish, and “1984” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me” have been transformed. Still, it’s amazing that such a recording has been sleeping for 43 years. This is a precious new discovery and a masterpiece that suddenly became the representative work of “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR”. The first chapter of the soul route that followed.
