Description

At the end of the “DIAMOND DOGS” era, Bowie became inclined towards soul music. A new excavation master who recorded that moment has appeared. This work is engraved with “Detroit performance on October 18th + 20th, 1974”. It is a two-disc set with each special audience recording on one disc. Speaking of 1974, it was the year “DIAMOND DOGS” was released, but the tour was a bit complicated. First of all, let’s look back on the circumstances from the schedule at that time and check the position of the show. {May: Release of “DIAMOND DOGS”} “DIAMOND DOGS TOUR” June 14th – July 20th: North America #1 (32 shows) {August: Production of “YOUNG AMERICANS” begins} September 2nd – 16th: North America #2 (12 shows) “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR” October 5th – December 1st: North America #3 (34 shows) ←★Here★ This is the live schedule for 1974. “North America #1-2” is the “DIAMOND DOGS TOUR”, but “North America #3” is also called “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR”, and the content is also different. Not only will new songs from “YOUNG AMERICANS” that have begun production be performed, but a large amount of arrangements that are conscious of soul music will be introduced. The members are also different, and in addition to Carlos mentioned above, the rhythm section will be replaced by Willie Weeks and Dennis Davis. Backing vocals were also performed by a large number of YOUNG AMERICANS members, including his then-girlfriend Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, and Luther Vandross. A total of 14 members are involved. The Detroit performances in this work are the 9th and 11th performances of “North America # 3”. There were five consecutive performances at the Michigan Palace Theater, and this work is the third and fifth performances. This work, which recorded such a show, is a vintage master that was recently newly excavated. Until now, part of the record of the five Detroit performances, “October 16th (first day)”, has been known, but of course this work is different. Moreover, each is a long recording of about 80 minutes. Moreover, the quality is also excellent. After all, it was the prestigious “JEMS” that handled the excavation. Both “October 18th (Disc 1)” and “October 20th (Disc 2)” were recorded by the same person (the sound is also very similar), but both were digitized from the original master. The freshness is ultimate, and of course there are no diving marks or deterioration over time. In fact, both are somewhat distant recordings, but the neat sound is endlessly fresh, and the scene at that time is revived to a magnificent extent. The show depicted by that sound is also wonderful. Our shop also introduces the masterpieces of “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR” “PHILADELPHIA 1974 (Wardour-234)” and “BOSTON NOVEMBER 1974 (Wardour-284)” on the press CD, but they were recorded in November when the tour was advanced. In contrast, this work was recorded in October, so the set is different. Although the main points are the same, “Footstompin'” has not yet appeared, instead “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “Panic In Detroit” are played. In particular, “It’s Gonna Be Me”, which was an outtake of “YOUNG AMERICANS”, is valuable. It was only performed in 1974, and is almost exclusively limited to “North America #2-3”. Of course, other repertoires are also important. After all, this tour was in the midst of meeting his ally Carlos Almar and becoming more and more devoted to soul music. You can’t miss the changes in the way he plays. “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS TOUR” was a turning point for Bowie, but it only lasted two months. It is an amazing new excavation master that conveys the first half of that period, “October 1974”.
