Description
When Bowie died, the German government made an official statement: “Farewell, David Bowie. You are our hero. Thank you for helping to bring down the wall.” This comment was a reference to the concert that David Bowie held on June 6, 1987, in the square in front of the Berlin Wall. The concert, held in Berlin as part of the Glass Spider tour, was not held in an existing venue, but instead was set up in a square near the Berlin Wall, with speakers facing the East Berlin side of the wall. In this symbolic place of the Cold War, people on both sides of the Berlin Wall came together through Bowie. One of Bowie’s signature songs, “Heroes,” is a masterpiece inspired by the image of lovers meeting on either side of the Berlin Wall. This concert seemed to project the people of East and West onto lovers, and appeal for East-West reconciliation. In East Germany at that time, gatherings without prior permission were prohibited, and under the watchful eye of the Stasi (Ministry of State Security in East Germany), 5,000 people gathered on the east side of the Berlin Wall, resulting in many arrests. Nevertheless, the young people of East Berlin were enthusiastic about Bowie’s concert, which could be heard through the ears. In the socialist camp during the Cold War, where Western art was banned, “it was like tasting forbidden fruit. Everyone intuitively knew that this concert was happening to change our situation.” This work is a complete soundboard recording of the West Berlin performance on June 6, 1987, which was one of the triggers for the fall of the Berlin Wall. Bonus tracks include the sound check from the day and a news report from the day.
