Description
In 1974, Bowie said goodbye to the charismatic “Ziggy Stardust” and set off for a new world. A video collection that allows you to witness the transition has been decided to be released. This work contains footage shot at 10 performances. There are various types, from precious 8mm to professionally shot record films, but this is a collection of footage of less than one song compiled by overseas enthusiasts. If you are an avid collector, you may remember the video collection “RIPPED & REWRAPPED” with a similar concept, but this work can be said to be an expanded and expanded version of that masterpiece. While “RIPPED & REWRAPPED” was a 29-minute work made up of six performances, this work is a compilation of 10 performances, 46 songs, and about 48 minutes. There are some professional shots, but the main and most important are the audience shots made with precious 8mm film. In the first place, “audience shooting” is a culture that developed in the 1980s when home video cameras became popular, but it also existed in the 1970s. It was filmed as a document for enthusiastic fans and related parties, but the medium was 8mm. However, unlike later videos, it was not possible to shoot for long periods of time, and only fragmented footage of tens of seconds to several minutes was left behind. In recent years, such 8mm films from the 1970s have been actively excavated, and audience recordings from the day are synchronized with them. It is also a popular method to create works. Moreover, 8mm is more beautiful than later audience shots. Video tapes are vulnerable to dubbing and deterioration over time, and the pixels are rough to begin with. Depending on the storage condition, 8mm, on the other hand, is sometimes excavated from the original source, so there is almost no deterioration, and the lustrous colors are exactly as they were at the time. This work is a piece that covers such valuable footage with the highest quality. In addition, the number of materials is not the only difference from the previous work “RIPPED & REWRAPPED”. Last time, the footage of one performance was put together on one track regardless of how many songs it was, but this time, it was divided into tracks for each song in more detail. Let’s organize the contents here. DIAMOND DOGS Tour (5 shows: June – September 1974) Ziggy Stardust: Moonage Daydream (4 shows) / Suffragette City (2 shows) / Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide (2 shows) Aladdin Sane: Time (3 shows) / Panic in Detroit (2 shows) / The Jean Genie / Aladdin Sane / Cracked Actor Diamond Dogs: Sweet Thing (3 shows) / 1984 (2 shows) / Rebel Rebel (2 shows) / Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me / Big Brother / Diamond Dogs Others: Space Oddity / The Width Of A Circle / Changes / All The Young Dudes / John, I’m Only Dancing (Again) THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour (5 shows: October – December 1974) Ziggy Stardust: Moonage Daydream / Suffragette City・Diamond Dogs: Rebel Rebel (3 shows) / 1984 (2 shows)・Young Americans: Young Americans (2 shows) / Somebody Up There Likes Me / Can You Hear Me?・Others: John, I’m Only Dancing (Again) (3 shows) / Footstompin’ … and so on. The final leg of the “DIAMOND DOGS Tour” is also known as “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour” and is often distinguished. Here, Bowie began to lean towards soul music, and also performed new songs from “YOUNG AMERICANS” which was in production. In this work, five shows each from “DIAMOND DOGS Tour” and “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour” are selected, and the sense of balance can be seen from the above. In addition, not only the distribution but also the content is different. “THE SOUL/PHILLY DOGS Tour” also arranges past hits in a funky way, and the band itself has undergone a major transformation, with the participation of the famous actor Carlos Alomar and the band becoming a large group. Although the stage set is dark and difficult to see because it is only 8mm, you can clearly witness the appearance of Bowie, who has changed his image. Previously, the 8mm archive was only noted for its documentary value, but it has been sublimated into a stunning video work by synchronizing the best sound. This work includes genuine professional shot footage, and it does not look inferior when viewed side by side. This is a piece that spells out “Bowie in 1974”, who was at the toning point with such historical treasures.
