Description

In 1997, Bowie was traveling around the world with “EARTHLING”, which opened up new horizons. An exquisite live album by the newly discovered DAT master is now available. The new master included “September 13, 1997 Los Angeles Performance”. This is a full audience recording recorded at the now-defunct famous venue “Universal Amphitheater”. This show was a masterpiece among the masterpieces that was called “the best show in Bowie’s career” among enthusiasts. First of all, let’s check the position of such a show on the schedule at that time. [“EARTHLING” released on February 3rd]・May 17th – June 5th: Warm-up (4 performances)・June 7th – August 14th: Europe (46 performances)・September 6th – 10th March 23rd: North America (29 performances) ←★Here★ October 31st – November 7th: South America (5 performances) This is Bowie in 1997. After touring mainly Europe in the summer, he moved to the United States in early fall. The Los Angeles performance of this work is the 6th concert of its “North American” leg. The show will be held for two consecutive nights at the Universal Amphitheater, and this is the second performance of the show. This work that recorded such a show is truly an exquisite audience recording. It’s not a close sound that can be mistaken for a sound board, but you can hardly feel the distance. The atmosphere is crystal clear, the strong core jumps straight into your hand, and the details are vivid. “Universal Amphitheater” is an indoor venue, but for some reason you can hardly feel the venue’s reverberations. The tone has a sense of distance that is typical of an audience, but it does not get blurred by the sound of the hall. It’s a powerful yet crisp sound, just like the latest outdoor festival recording. What is especially surprising is the bass. In audience recordings, it tends to become sparse or too strong to break, but this work is neither. It’s dynamically powerful, yet the vibe is clear without cracking. In fact, the original sound was too strong and unbalanced, even if it didn’t break, but that was corrected with careful mastering. The overall balance of the entire ensemble has been adjusted to create a sound that allows you to enjoy the clear sound world of the original sound to the fullest. The show drawn with such a sound is also wonderful. Of course, the centerpiece of the set is the new album “EARTHLING”, with 7 of the 10 songs being big hits. There are plenty of delicious classics sprinkled throughout. What’s more, even the new songs from “EARTHLING” have an overwhelmingly sensual groove that surpasses that of the studio album. It is played with plenty of rock sensation and dynamism. This tour is also known for frequently changing songs. Speaking of the masterpieces of the “North American” leg, our masterpiece soundboard albums “BOWIE TO THE RESCUE: PORT CHESTER 1997” and “NEW YORK MAN” also come to mind, but these two works are just special performances for broadcasting. This work is a regular concert, and runs through the full scale of about 2 and a half hours, with plenty of famous songs that can not be heard in both works. In particular, the repertoire includes famous songs such as “Queen Bitch,” “White Light/White Heat,” “V-2 Schneider,” “The Hearts Filthy Lesson,” and “The Last Thing You Should Do,” which I could not hear even with the two works combined. “Dead Man Walking”, which was an acoustic bonus in both works, can also be enjoyed as an electric version. And the performance that plays that set is the best. In the words of a maniac, “Not much else needs to be said about this show. One of the best of David’s long career.” Certainly, it can be summed up in these words. If the performance is energetic, Bowie’s singing voice is also in great condition. Even at the age of 50, you can fully enjoy his passionate performance, where his spirit of challenge is transformed into melodies and beats. A new excavation of a DAT master who captured the famous performance of the 90’s with wonderful sound that even enthusiasts are speechless. This is a masterpiece live album that has been polished with mastering that brings out its full potential. One that will become one of the most representative works of “EARTHLING TOUR”.
