Description
The late Wayne Shorter brought together the supreme quartet of Perez, Patitucci, and Brian Blade to express new jazz in the 21st century. Now that Shorter is gone, the three continue to work as the Children of the Light, known as the best modern jazz trio. However, this is the first release of a precious live album, in which two rare performances were recorded with Adam Crews, a talented drummer comparable to Brian, on a super special A-grade, high-quality soundboard! This work is a two-disc set that has been completely recorded on the label’s own carefully mastered ultra-high quality stereo sound board, with the latest performance by the irregular Children of the Light, which features Perez and Patitucci, Chick Corea’s Origin instead of Brian Blade, Latin jazz giant Eddie Palmieri’s Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, and most of Perez’s solo albums, as well as Adam Crews, who is said to be one of the best drummers in New York from the 1990s to the present, and has gained great trust from many prestigious artists. The latest performance by the irregular Children of the Light, which features Adam Crews, who has survived on the front lines of New York from the 1990s to the present, was held at the Fasching Jazz Club in Stockholm, Sweden on March 15, 2024, and the Volkshaus Jazz Festival in Basel, Switzerland on March 23, 2024. The performance by three of the best improvisers in the jazz world today, Pérez, a pianist hailed as a Panamanian hero, Patitucci, a leader in the jazz bass world, and Adam Crews, a rapidly developing modern drummer, is a set piece, but they each throw out ideas that come to mind on the spot, and each throws back ideas, which they all know very well about the improvisation associated with Shorter, and they communicate with each other at a high level, sometimes becoming stunningly beautiful, sometimes becoming abstract, and the pieces change shape and show various expressions, landing in places that you would never have imagined. This is a practice that has been passed down from Miles Davis to Shorter: “never play the same thing twice!” Perez and Patitucci are fine, but it’s amazing how drummer Crews gives a wonderful performance that is in no way inferior to Brian throughout the entire piece. Cruise believes that “music comes before drums” and his solo albums are not only the best in terms of strong grooves, but also in songs that are like requiems and elements of free improvisation. His outstanding technique in Latin music, which boasts the ultimate rhythm, and his sensibility in improvisation that he gained through his encounters with Perez and Potter, make him an impressive musician who is a cut above just other drummers. In a sense, he is a drummer who is quite close to Brian. Is there anyone else out there who has such a sensibility that goes beyond technique and is such a genuine and musical trio? The mysterious sounds of Miles Davis’ Golden Quintet’s “Nefertiti” with its strong Shorter influence in the latter half of the band, and Shorter’s supreme quartet, make me feel as if Wayne Shorter is there!
