The 50th anniversary edition of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s masterpiece “DEJA VU” was released two weeks ago, and the domestic edition will be released tomorrow, and the JEMS team’s Mike Millard master also surprised CSNY. He discovered the sound source at the perfect time. What was released this time is Millard’s first recording of their 1990 Santa Monica stage. Until now, I have continued to be surprised by the discovery of unknown mirrored sound sources, but I think it is quite surprising that he recorded CSNY in 1990. This is because during this period, the four of them met at least once a year, even if not constantly, and that was usually at a charity concert. In other words, it was a time when the four CSNY members reunited on stage once a year, starting with the long-awaited reunion that took place at Live Aid in 1985. In 1990, the four of them appeared together for two consecutive charity concerts from March to April. The Mirrored Master released this time captured Santa Monica on March 31st. Moreover, this concert is not just a charity event. It was an event for CSNY’s original drummer, Dallas Taylor, who also participated in the recording of their previous album “DEJA VU”. Like all four of them, he was addicted to drink and drugs in the 1970s. Drinking in particular became a major problem for him, and he eventually deteriorated to the point where he needed a liver transplant. This charity was held to raise money for his treatment expenses. It attracted a lot of attention in America, not only because of its unique stage design, but also because the four members of CSNY came together to save their former bandmates. Because of this, Millard was unable to secure the usual good position, and in the case of this sound source, the sound pressure was not as powerful as the usual Millard recordings. Still, it seems that Millard headed to the venue because he himself wanted to see the four of them and Taylor come together for the first time in a while. In addition, the JEMS team that released this sound source commented, “Although the sound image has a sense of distance, the sound quality itself is very clear.” In fact, the freshness of the tape is wonderful, and it is perfect for the group’s stage where the acoustic sound is the main focus. This is the sound source that Millard recorded from such a precious day, so even though it was released on CD-R, the pitch was carefully adjusted and evolved to make it easier to listen to. And the stage started with Neil’s solo. The set list was full of new songs, including the recently released album “FREEDOM” and “Mother Earth,” which will be included in the next album. You can feel the confidence that comes from the time when he regained his strength as an artist with his last album. Next was an acoustic stage by the three CSN members, and this was also the time when they were actively touring. What’s more, it was also a time when the three of us would be visiting Japan for the first time two months later. That’s why the harmonies of the three members and Stephen Stills’ guitar are skillfully staged. After closing the three-person set with the classic “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” Neil appeared and CSNY reunited. Again, their version opens with “Human Highway,” which was never released, and then they play Neil’s “Silver And Gold,” which was an unreleased song at the time, as CSNY. But his aggressive stance stands out. Best of all, for the last two songs, Taylor, the main character of the event, joined in, making it possible for him and CSNY to perform with a full band for the first time in 20 years. The excitement was tremendous, with people cheering for Taylor in particular. If it were a normal concert recording, it could be dismissed as “noisy surroundings”, but this is a concert that rescues Dallas Taylor. I guess the audience really came together to see CSNY and Taylor reunite for the first time in a long time…I think they were actually moved. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2015 at the age of 66, but he might have died sooner if he hadn’t had the transplant surgery that took place after this support concert. After successfully undergoing surgery, Taylor devoted his life to raising awareness of alcohol and drug addiction rehabilitation. It was such an important day in the history of CSNY, and Millard left behind a rare stage that included plenty of valuable performances.
