Description

We have prepared a collection of demos and rehearsal takes taken prior to the recording of Cream’s masterpiece “DISRAELI GEARS”. We have previously offered the high-quality CD “Mobile Fidility Sound Lab” version of “DISRAELI GEARS” as an item, but this highly regarded album was recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York in April and May 1967. Chronologically, Cream had prepared demos of new songs for the recording in March. These are the takes included on this album. They brought this tape and played it for Ahmet Ertegun, the boss of Atlantic Records, who only appreciated some of the songs and did not use the others. They then asked producer Felix Pappalardi to compose songs for the album, and they also had Pappalardi rewrite the lyrics using only the rhythm track of Lawdy Mama included in the demo, and remade it into Strange Brew. Part of the demo version that was brought with them is included on this album. From here, four songs were selected: Blue Condition, SWLABR, Take It Back, and We’re Going Wrong, while the other two (written by Jack Bruce) were scrapped. Considering the circumstances, it can be said to be a very interesting recording. It includes vivid scenes of the members’ conversations and sound production in the studio, and Blue Condition is a take in which Jack Bruce’s harmonica plays an active role, completely different from the later finished version. This is what makes it a demo, and it’s also why you never get tired of listening to the same song. Originally, it was planned to record in London, but when Cream went to the United States for the first time to appear at the “Murray the K – The Fifth Dimension Show” held in New York in April, a mixed event of American and British bands, Ertegun, who happened to hear Clapton’s guitar playing, called Cream’s manager Robert Stigwood, who was accompanying him, and it is said that he asked them to record at Atlantic Studios immediately. Ertegun was so enamoured with Clapton’s talent that he called Cream “Eric Clapton’s Blues Trio”. Therefore, even though Jack Bruce was the main vocalist and main songwriter, he was treated coldly by Ertegun and it is said that two of his songs were intentionally scrapped. Jack re-recorded one of the two scrapped songs, Weird Of Hermiston, on his later solo album. He probably couldn’t give up because he thought it was good. You can compare it with Jack’s solo version and see how each song developed into its finished form. I think it will be more interesting if you listen to it with such a back story in mind. The sound quality is an official level line recording, so please rest assured. It is a valuable high-quality sound source that explores the back of the masterpiece.
