Description

In the so-called “Cozy Tapes” left behind by Cozy Powell, you can listen to many valuable demo recordings of famous bands such as RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and WHITESNAKE. Koji’s activities with these famous bands are a big part of his appeal, but just as much as that, his wide variety of session activities are also a characteristic of Koji. There are also many demo sound sources from these session activities, as exemplified by the “ALIVE IN STUDIO” series. Among them, this work “LONG COLD WINTER SESSION”, which contains the sound source when Koji participated in the session for CINDERELLA’s “LONG COLD WINTER”, allows you to enjoy one aspect of his activities in the best way. This work is a direct recording of the tape from the cassette master that Koji owned, which had “Tom’s Tape” handwritten on the index sheet. As mentioned above, the content is a studio demo of CINDERELLA’s 2nd album “LONG COLD WINTER”. This type of sound source is often a basic track with rhythm recorded or an instrumental demo that even includes a guitar, but this sound source is a writing session take before recording. You can enjoy the stage in which a song is born and takes shape with a top-level stereo soundboard that has the triple signature of clarity, brightness, and separation. From that time, original drummer Fred Corey was unable to play as well as he wanted in the studio for “LONG COLD WINTER” due to lack of experience, so Cozy Powell and Denny Carmassi were called in to help, and they created the rhythm for the album. It is known that he was in charge of Because Cozy participated in a semi-secret manner, it is easy to think that this was a recording session only, but in reality he was involved in this work from the song writing stage. In fact, Tom Kiefer said in an interview at the time, “When Cozy’s name came up, I immediately knew he could do it. So I contacted Cozy, and he was happy to accept. Within about two days. He immediately came to the studio and memorized the songs one by one. He was very quick at picking up the songs. He even got one take on the first record he came over. I was just using Fred’s set. He was amazing.” This tape is exactly what recorded the rehearsal session. Throughout the entire recording, I get the impression that Cozy is hitting powerfully with his own color, matching the melody of the guitar riff played by Tom (albeit rough and basic). The completed album was all about the neat way of hitting, but the play that you can hear on this sound source is exactly the same as Cozy Powell’s signature play! Tom and Cozy have a harmonious combination and free interaction that makes you wonder, “Did they intend to continue their formal band activities?” Contains all songs from the album except for “Second Wind”. As you can see in the cassette index photo (published on the inner jacket), although the title of the song has been decided, the song, including the overall arrangement, has not yet been completed. Except for the provisional songs sung by Tom in “Coming Home” and “Take Me Back,” all the others are instrumental takes without songs. The three-piece combination of Cozy’s drums, Eric’s bass, and Tom’s guitar creates a raw groove while establishing the structure and style of the song (this session somehow reminds me of M.S.G.’s “ASSAULT ATTACK DEMOS”). ). The groovy “If You Don’t Like It” that showcases Cozy’s personality and the powerful “Fallin’ Apart At The Seams” (the ending drum roll is powerful!) are must-listen takes. Also, the riffs in “Take Me Back”, which is reminiscent of “Slide It In”, and “The Last Mile” are very pleasant. Of particular note is the title track “Long Cold Winter”! Only this song has an organ added, and the sight of Cozy exploding with a John Bonham-like play (each shot is heavy!) in a calm and profound song is a masterpiece. Don’t miss listening to the famous song “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” recorded in the second half. The song’s slightly heartwarming sentiment will surely leave a deep impression on the listener even without the lyrics. In the last song, “Fire And Ice,” Cozy responds with a tight play to Tom’s lively riff. At the end, a series of two-bass hits pop out (although they are fading out). The recording ends with a play that pleases the listener, saying, “This is Cozy Powell!” At that time, Koji was in the stage of searching for “new activities”, such as EL&POWELL having ended and mainly working on projects and sessions such as FORCEFIELD. After seeing the success of WHITESNAKE around the same time, Koji must have been fired up and thinking, “Can I beat them too?” Koji’s motivation and passion are clearly conveyed through the spirited playing of the sessions recorded here. (The fruit of this motivation was BLACK SABBATH’s “HEADLESS CROSS,” which he participated in immediately after.) That’s how it was). “LONG COLD WINTER” may be a unique category in Cozy’s career, which has followed the royal road of British rock. However, the approximately 41 minutes of this work will satisfy 120% Cozy fans even if they don’t know the album. This completely limited press CD is a must-see for fans! 1. Intro. 2. Coming Home 3.
