Description
COVERDALE/PAGE is a legendary unit that left a fleeting mark on rock history. Here is the apex live album that records their “last night”. That project was certainly legendary, even in its glory. The album “COVERDALE/PAGE” reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 5 in the US, bringing Page his first success since ZEP and Coverdale his second-highest success since “SERPENS ALBUS”. However, the world tour that was scheduled after that was canceled due to poor ticket sales (at the time, there was talk of a recession due to the Gulf War and changes in the music scene, but judging from the good performance of the charts, it is a little hard to believe that they were so poor that they were canceled). As a result, they were only able to perform live in Japan. This work contains the final night “December 22, 1993: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium” performance and a valuable rehearsal. The Nagoya performance is known as a special show even for COVERDALE/PAGE, but our shop has newly unearthed the original DAT of that highest peak recording. It is the apex work that was digitized from there. After all, it is a legendary tour that symbolizes the early 90s, so we have archived many live albums at our shop. In terms of organization, let’s look back on 24 years ago with the schedule here. ・ December 14th: Nippon Budokan “KNEES AND PRAY” ・ December 15th: Nippon Budokan “BUDOKAN 1993 2ND NIGHT” – 1 day move & off ・ December 17th: National Yoyogi Stadium “YOYOGI 1993 1ST NIGHT” ・ December 18th: National Yoyogi Stadium – 1 day move & off ・ December 20th: Osaka Castle Hall “PRIDE & JOY” ・ December 21st: Osaka Castle Hall ・ December 22nd: Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium [This work] [A great performance revived with the recorder’s treasured DAT] All 7 performances above. Among the two days of the symbolic venues in Tokyo and Osaka, this work was the only performance at the smallest Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium. There are four types of records of such a Nagoya performance, large and small, but the two giants in terms of both quality and length were “OVER NOW” and “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE LAST NIGHT ON TOUR 1993”. This work is a direct CD of the original master DAT of “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE LAST NIGHT ON TOUR 1993 (hereafter, already released)”. The shock from the moment it was played. The already released version started with the members’ appearance scene, and “Absolution Blues” started in about 40 seconds, but the original recording started much earlier, and about 11 minutes of pre-show scenes were saved. Of course, this work includes the female voice of “The performance will start soon. If you are standing, please return to your seat as soon as possible” and the vivid atmosphere, but that is just proof of the original master. What is more shocking is the sound itself. It is far, far better than the famous sound that was once called the best. Moreover, the difference is not just a little, but obvious to anyone’s ears. The previously released version was also extremely clear, but this work clearly has a thick and rich bass, and the overall balance is well-balanced. For example, “Kashmir”. The main riff, which is composed of a bass drum and snare loop, roars, but in the previously released version, the bass sounds frivolous, so the performance sounds floating. Furthermore, the good balance is noticeable in the treble. The previously released version is strangely uneven, with some dropping, some protruding, and others strangely uneven. For example, in “In My Time Of Dying”, the previously released version has vocals and guitars that do not blend into the performance and stand out, and they are strangely distorted, especially when the high tones of the vocals are delayed. In contrast, this work has no such unnaturalness at all. The sound that the PA at the scene would have sounded in a completely natural balance runs through the entire work. The reason why these defects occurred is unknown. Perhaps it was due to poor equipment in the early days of CD bootlegs, or perhaps the best equalization at the time backfired… Please don’t misunderstand here, the previously released album was an unrivaled masterpiece. Without this excavation, the above points would not be included in the defects. It is a superb sound. However, this work exceeds even that. It is a live album that exceeds the peak because it accurately picks up all the beautiful sounds that the original DAT absorbed and precisely converts them into CDs. The show depicted with such a unique sound is also unique. After all, it is a phantom unit that disappeared after only seven performances in Japan, so each performance is a process of growth. Even for an ordinary band, the seventh performance is when the engine finally warms up and begins to show its true potential, but with COVERDALE/PAGE, it is even more noticeable. In particular, it is Page’s first tour in five years, and the more it goes on in the second half, the more the combination becomes mature and the ensemble is completed. The symbol of this is “Shake My Tree”. In the middle of the show, while Page was playing the theremin, Denny Carmassi signaled and they performed a surprise performance of almost a full chorus of “Whole Lotta Love”. This is not just “one more song, lucky”. Up until this point, they had been improving their proficiency with a roughly fixed set, but it was only at the seventh performance that they were able to have enough leeway to have some fun. This “leeway” can be felt from every corner of the song. Now, all seven performances can be touched by some kind of record, but it is this leeway that makes it said that “Nagoya is special”. [Valuable super-excellent sound check & rehearsal] Just being able to listen to this show with the apex sound is a superb one, but this work is not over yet. This recorder DAT also contained even more valuable sound check and rehearsal sound sources. This recording has also been leaked in the past, but the quality is a world apart. It seems that the previously released digital master was once dubbed onto a cassette, and if the sound had deteriorated, the pitch had also gone wild. However, this time it was a DAT copy with zero degradation. There was no need for remastering or pitch adjustment, and a valuable sound check was recorded. Moreover, the contents are also wonderful. They tried out “Whole Lotta Love,” which will be performed at the Nagoya performance (vocals are by keyboardist Brett Tuggle), and treasures such as “Dazed And Confused,” “Dancing Days,” “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp,” “Black Country Woman,” “Communication Breakdown,” “Misty Mountain Hop,” and “Stairway To Heaven,” which were not performed in the actual performance, pop out one after another (you can also listen to “How Many More Times” and “Heartbreaker” while only playing the bass). Of course, since it’s a rehearsal, it’s not the type to enjoy it as a song, with only a few phrases or jams, but that’s why you can fully inhale the vivid atmosphere of the backstage. The final performance depicted with the ultimate sound only possible with DAT recording, and the extremely valuable rehearsal. In terms of quality and the content of the show, this is equivalent to the original album “COVERDALE/PAGE”. This is the most important album of the legendary unit.
