Description
This is a rare video recording of a historic performance by Charles Mingus, a legendary bassist who shines brightly in jazz history, and Eric Dolphy, a genius multi-reed player who died young. The 58 minutes of footage from a rehearsal just before a live performance at the University of Oslo in 1964 has been colorized using the latest AI technology to achieve a naturalness incomparable to the original black and white footage. This European tour saw members replaced with locally hired members due to drug use and related health reasons, so there are very few recordings of the original members. While there’s nothing particularly noteworthy about trumpeter Johnny Coles’ technique itself, he overwhelms the audience with his powerful sound. The highlight, of course, is Dolphy. He’s like a “fish in water”… In any case, it’s an absolutely phenomenal solo performance. From classics like “So Long Eric” and “Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk” to the Ellington number “Take The ‘A’ Train,” this must-see and must-hear video is a condensed showcase of the Mingus Band’s charm. Recorded just two months before Eric Dolphy’s sudden death in June of that year, it is an extremely important document capturing the golden age of Mingus-Dolphy. This video captures a historic performance representative of the 1964 European tour. A precious record capturing Eric Dolphy in his final years, this is a must-have collector’s item for jazz fans, allowing them to experience the overwhelming musical prowess and creativity of the Charles Mingus Sextet.
