Description

The Chambers Brothers, who created a sound that mixed white music rock and black music soul in the psychedelic era, recorded a live performance at Fillmore East on February 12, 1971, different from their official album Love, Peace And Happiness / Live At Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, with a super high-quality soundboard. Although it is not as well known as Jimi Hendrix or Sly, it is clear that Prince was influenced by their sound. The 13-minute New Generation is psyche-funk, with phrases reminiscent of the guitar solos that appear in Prince’s Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic and other songs. Prince also covered the original version of Funky under the name New Power Generation, which was included on the Chambers Brothers’ 1970 album New Generation, but the live version is a must-listen as it takes a different angle of funk than Prince’s cover (not included on the official Fillmore East). In Love, Peace & Happiness, the band repeatedly chants “Higher” like Sly’s Higher. The cover of Otis Redding’s I Can’t Turn You Loose is an aggressive arrangement with a down-to-earth feel that’s a must-listen. A hidden influencer who is not well known even to Prince fans? Check out this great performance. Fillmore East, New York, USA February 12th 1971 01. New Generation (13:36) 02. Funky (5:25) 03. Let’s Do It (2:50) 04. Pollution (3:45) 05.
