Description
CARAVAN, a symbol of Canterbury rock, came to Japan for their 50th anniversary tour. The latest original recording is now available. This work includes the “July 20, 2019 Club Citta Kawasaki” performance. It is the super best audience recording. This is their third visit to Japan in 14 years, and only one performance of this work. Normally, we would check the show position on the schedule, but here we will take a look at the overall view of “50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR”. ●March 2nd, 2018: HMS PROG CRUISE ・March 17th-19th: UK (3 performances) ・August 3rd: A NEW DAY FESTIVAL ・November 8th-16th: UK (7 performances) ●2019 January 25th: Godal Mining Performance February 22nd: Poland (1 performance) April 24th-29th: Germany (5 performances) June 22nd: Canterbury Performance July 20th : Japan (1 performance) ←★Coco★・July 27th – August 10th: Europe (4 shows)・September 7th: BIG GREEN CARDIGAN FESTIVAL・October 12th – 27th: UK (3 shows) This is the schedule announced so far. The band’s 50th anniversary tour began last year and has been held mainly in their home country of England, but also in various European countries. This work was not only a one-time performance in Japan, but also the only concert held outside of Europe. This work, which records a show that is too special for both CARAVAN and Japan, is the ideal audience recording that depicts the very best. The recording was made by one of the masters, “Western Japan’s Strongest Taper”, and of course is the original master only for this work. The sound is worthy of being called “just like a soundboard.” The powerful and active core flies into your ears with no sense of distance, and the air that goes beyond transparency and makes you forget it even exists conveys details clearly. If you listen closely with headphones, you can feel that the snare and metal tones are like an audience, but even that is at a level that is common on official soundboards, and it even gives the sound an elegance. The applause between songs and the occasional clap are strangely distant, and since this is Japan, I listen quietly during the performance. It’s a superb recording that makes it ridiculous to think, “Is what I’m listening to now a guest record? Or a line?” The one and only 50th anniversary @ Japan is depicted with that sound. It was announced in advance that it would be the “best selection of all time,” but the content was centered around the performance of all the songs from the famous album “Gray and Pink no Chi”. The show consists of two parts, and the first part is all songs of “Gray and Pink Land”. Although it is not a complete reproduction because the title track was brought to the opening, the world of the famous album is depicted with the order of the songs unchanged. The second part, after a break, is the best set in the regular style. Let’s organize the selection here. ●The arrival of the caravan (1970)・And I Wish I Were Stoned, For Richard ●The land of gray and pink (1971)・All songs (Part 1) ●WATERLOO LILY (1972)・The Love In Your Eye ●Every night For a Fat Woman (1973) Memory Lain, Hugh/Headloss, The Dog, The Dog, He’s At It Again, L’Auberge Du Sanglier/A Hunting We Shall Go/Pengola/Backwards/A Hunting We Shall Go( Reprise) ●BETTER BY FAR (1977)・Nightmare ●THE UNAUTHORIZED BREAKFAST ITEM (2003)・Smoking Gun (Right For Me) ●PARADISE FILTER (2013)・Dead Man Walking, I’ll Be There For You, I ‘m On My Way●FROM THE HALF HOUSE (2017: Pi’s solo)・Better Days Are To Come…and it goes like this. A style that plays plenty of famous songs from the 70’s, interspersed with two recent works and Pai’s solo songs. It’s not all carriers evenly… but there’s no way that the large-scale behavior in the 1970s was bad. In particular, the feature where he performs two major songs in their entirety from the famous album “For a Woman Who Gains Weight Every Night” warms my heart. And the performance that plays such a set is also wonderful. Mr. CARAVAN Pie Hastings’ vocals and guitar are delicious, and Jan Schellhaas’s keyboard is also exquisite. And Jeffrey Richardson plays a big role. While switching between viola and flute, he also plays lead on the guitar and performs percussion with a spoon. The rhythm team, Jim Leverton and Mark Walker, who support these big names, also do a great job. Not only is it powerful and extremely stable, but the groove is just so comfortable. As mentioned above, they don’t perform live every day, but you can fully immerse yourself in a well-rounded ensemble that doesn’t make you feel that way. It’s been exactly one year since Canterbury’s iconic SOFT MACHINE last performed in Japan (you can enjoy the final day at our shop “OSAKA 2018 (Amity 502)”). Another iconic CARAVAN also visited Japan. Although they did not announce that it would be the last time, I felt the weight of the 50th anniversary when Jeffrey said, “Richard Coughlan, who was there last time I came to Japan, is no longer here…” Then, he performed all songs from the famous album “Gray and Pink Land”. This work is a masterpiece of a live album that allows you to experience such a one-time performance in Japan with super superb sound. For us Japanese people, this is a very special book.
