Description

Bruce Springsteen’s “BORN IN THE USA” tour took the world by storm. Several performances have now been officially released in full in the Live Archive Series, but all of them date from August 1984, when the tour was getting off the ground and official recordings were made. Just. Rather, one of the performances that will not be officially released from now on is St. Paul and Civic Center on the first day of the tour. This day has been famous among enthusiasts for a long time, and it is one of the few days when the song “No Surrender” from “BORN IN THE USA” was performed by the same band as the album. In fact, they even released the LP “NO SURRENDER” that featured this as a selling point. Due to the nature of this being the first day of the tour, it is unlikely that it was officially recorded, but instead important video recording (more on this later) was done on the day. An audience recording that captured such a day appeared 10 years ago with a great sound quality version under the trader title “BORN IN THE USA TOUR OPENING NIGHT”, and soon after, GODFATHER released it under the title “READY FOR THE WORLD”. I am. However, three years ago, mania mjk5510, who is famous in the internet sound source world, discovered another audience recording. This is said to have a sound quality that even surpasses “READY FOR THE WORLD” (hereinafter referred to as the already released version). However, since the previously released version had penetrated among maniacs all over the world, it was also an unfortunate sound source that received almost no attention, even though it was a precious upper version audience. Why isn’t another sound source with this wonderful sound quality released? I can only think that this was due in part to timing. However, thankfully, 10 years have passed since the release of the previous edition, and when I listen to this sound source again, the sound quality is really wonderful. There’s no reason not to release this now. It is true that the existing sound source had a close sound image and a well-balanced recording, but the sound source discovered by mjk5510 easily exceeds that in terms of closeness and freshness. Moreover, it is a low generation first generation copy. If you listen to this sound source, the existing sound source will have a poor sound spread and will sound dark. In addition, this sound source has two cuts during the performance of “Glory Days”, the beginning of “Working On The Highway”, and one song of “Ramrod” is not recorded in its entirety. Therefore, when releasing the sound source online, mjk5510 himself filled in the cut parts with the existing sound source, but the editing for “Glory Days” was extremely sloppy, so for this release, I redid this patch. Therefore, you can compare it with the existing sound source at these points, but you should be able to realize how excellent this sound source is. If you can listen to the first day of the legendary “BORN IN THE USA” tour with this wonderful sound quality, it will definitely attract attention from enthusiasts all over the world, but there is still a lot to listen to. First of all, from the opening, it’s not “Born In The USA.” It opens with “Thunder Road” instead. Is this the “BORN IN THE USA” tour? Since it is the first day, there are many songs that will be performed for the first time live, but “Johnny 99” does not have a blues harmonica intro like the later ones, and it is rare that it starts with his humming like the album version. However, the highlight of the day, the band version of “No Surrender”, appeared early in the live performance. And finally, “Born In The USA” is played in this position. What’s more, the performance did not reprise at this point, and instead, it was a surprising development that it was a medley to “Badlands”, which was the closing song of the first half of the live show. In the second part of the live performance, it is unusual for Bruce to explain to the audience not to set off firecrackers before the start, but that is not surprising. Immediately after the second part starts, the “Dancing In The Dark” music starts.・A video shoot was waiting for me. No wonder Bruce, upon seeing the film crew led by director Brian De Palma, exclaimed, “Here’s Hollywood!” In fact, they had rented the Civic Center the day before to shoot mainly close-ups, but this time they also shot on stage to capture the live scene. One of the famous episodes of this day is that they played “Dancing In The Dark” twice in a row for that purpose, but when listening to the sound source, I noticed that take 2 had a longer ending, and the audience was excited. Therefore, it is assumed that this is where actress Courteney Cox took the stage and the dance scene was filmed. The filming was worth it, and the song became a big hit, but at this point dancing on stage with a woman was just a part of the filming process and was not yet an annual event. As evidence of that, “Sherry Darling” is being played on this day, and you can feel the excitement that the blues would be dancing with the audience. It seems to be the first day of the tour, and the entire performance of each song is still light at this point, especially “Working On The Highway” which is valuable as it is played while maintaining the atmosphere of the album version. Although it is a fact that is often overlooked, it is also worth hearing that at the beginning of the tour, a cover of the Rolling Stones “Street Fighting Man” was played at the end of the live show. And the bonus track uses rare performances from the sound source of the third day of St. Paul, but these are also new sound sources released by mjk5510 and are the first to be released on CD. This is also a very good audience recording with a quiet surrounding, and the band version of “No Surrender”, which was the second time and the last on the “BORN IN THE USA” tour, is also included. Unlike the first day, the ending evolved into an arrangement that incorporated a guitar battle between Bruce and Nils Lofgren, but this was still the last time the band performed. In this way, we added a valuable track at the same place on the third day to St. Paul on the first day of the tour, which is a series of highlights. It’s already like the first day, and the atmosphere is completely different compared to the familiar performance at the first performance in Japan, which will be released at the same time!
