Description

The schedule for our tour to Japan in 1986 was a bit irregular; we first performed at Budokan, then went on to Osaka and Nagoya, and ended up at Budokan one last time. All the performances of this tour have been spread on the internet, and there has been a consistent tendency for them to include “periodic sounds of rustling against the microphone” and “coughing can be heard.” From this it is clear that the recordings were made with the same taper, but the reason why only the last day, when the recording condition was the most stable, has been used for the previously released discs is due to other reasons besides the performance content. (Cough coughing is most noticeable in Nagoya). However, the sound quality itself is of very high quality on any day, and the degree of sound image on is also sufficiently wonderful. Therefore, we have decided to release the first day of Budokan among the sound sources from Japan in 1986 that are available on the internet. As expected, it pales in comparison to the audience recording on the final day of Budokan, which was obtained independently, and the second half of “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky” was not recorded due to a tape change, which is a major flaw, but it is still a mania. It is an excellent sound source that everyone from beginners to beginners can enjoy without complaint. In addition to Dylan appearing for the first time in eight years since 1978, it was not only Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ first (and last) visit to Japan, but also because it was the first day. It was clear that the audience was watching them with bated breath. In other words, the sound source is even easier to hear because the surroundings are quiet. In particular, Petty and his friends were clearly nervous since it was their first time performing in Japan, and there was almost no MC, probably because they knew they couldn’t speak English. Also, in the previous “When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky”, Mike Campbell, who plays lead guitar, used a wah-wah pedal on the final day, but here you can enjoy the difference that he is playing normally. In that respect, in addition to Dylan having 78 years of experience, he had come to Japan incognito from the music video shoot the previous year, so his performance here was truly magnificent. Not only did he have the luxury of repeating “Domo, Domo,” which was a specialty of his 1986 performance in Japan (maybe he memorized it from his visit to Japan the previous year?), but he also played “To Ramona”, which was not heard on the final day, in the singing corner. I think it’s attractive that they’re showing off. The best part of all is that during “Like A Rolling Stone,” which was supposed to start with the introduction of the members, Dylan accidentally introduced the chorus just as the band was saying, “Let’s get in!” and the intro was redone (he apologized to Petty and others). I laughed out loud at how it turned out. Both the atmosphere of the venue and the performance were completely different from the last day, so it was really interesting to compare them.
