Description

Up until now, Bob Dylan’s live recordings have mainly been released from the 1970s and the late 1980s to early 1990s, but this time, two live recordings from years that have never been released before will be released at the same time. First, 1986 in the United States. That year, he toured extensively until the summer with Tom Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, backing him up. He even came to Japan in March, which attracted a lot of attention. However, the ’86 tour itself has now become something that is disregarded. This is because the following year, Dylan began to actively change his set list significantly and play songs that he had never played live before, so that year’s set list was seen as having few changes. More than that, Dylan himself confessed in his autobiography that it was a time when he “lost motivation and was thinking about retiring.” As he mentioned in his autobiography, the Heartbreakers’ performance on the summer US tour was in top form, and it was reassuring to see them supporting Dylan. However, Dylan himself testified that he lost confidence as the 1986 tour progressed and seriously considered retirement. Perhaps because of this, Dylan incorporated a large number of cover songs, both old and new, during the 1986 tour, which was also a result of his reluctance to sing. Dylan’s enthusiasm was conveyed during his Japan performances, but it is true that during the heavily promoted summer US tour, there were some shows that just seemed to go through the schedule. There are many soundboard recordings of the 1986 US tour, but these performances highlight Dylan’s unparalleled, monotonous singing, and they are not highly rated despite being SBDs. The 1986 US tour was a kind of slump, but there was one period that stood out as particularly brilliant. That was Madison Square Garden in July, which is the subject of this release. New York, where MSG is located, is the place where Dylan left Minneapolis in search of success and began his activities, and it is also the place where Dylan has recorded his albums many times, so it can be called his base. Moreover, when it comes to a live performance at MSG, there is no way he won’t be fired up. There were three MSG gigs in 1986, and all three days are considered by enthusiasts to be outstanding shows from the 1986 US tour. Dylan’s upper mood was evident from the first day, July 15th, when he shouted, “I love you, New York!”, but the third and final day, July 1st, was not only the longest show of the three performances, but also shone as an exceptionally upper show. In fact, Dylan was very excited from the opening and sang with great energy. He sang cover songs such as “We Three,” which became a repertoire from the time of the Japanese performance and was frequently played in the US in 1986, and “We Had It All,” a version sung by Keith that is familiar to Stones enthusiasts, with great emotion. Just listening to these will convey the heat that easily blows away ordinary 1986 recordings. On the other hand, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ parts are in top form and the excitement in the venue is hot. However, on this day, Dylan’s solo singing part was also powerful, and in particular, “Mr. Tambourine Man” is a wonderful song by Dylan. The sound quality of the audience recording that captured this best show is also wonderful. The rich presence and outstanding clarity, which are more than the closeness of the sound image of a sound board, bring back the exciting night in a realistic way. The voice of Dylan in the previous singing part is captured so vividly that the wonderful performance and singing are even more clearly conveyed. Since it is a sound source with such a rich sound quality and performance, in the past, an LP called “WITH A ROLLING STONE” was released to convey the great performance of the third day of MSG to enthusiasts, but there is no release on CD. Of the three days, only the second day was released under the title “CLEAN GUT GIG”. This situation is probably due to the fact that the sound source is a rare existence that is not widely distributed. On the contrary, no sound source has appeared on the Internet for nearly ten years. We got such a rare audience recording. While making the most of the original sound, we adjusted the pitch and removed noise to create the best possible condition. As for the three days of MSG, Ron Wood made a pop-in appearance every day after the middle of the show, “Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35”, and there are many photos of him. Although he is not the most prominent player (like he was at Hyde Park in 1996), on this day, Ron introduced Dylan during the member introduction and excited the venue, and his presence was also captured. There was a reason why the LP mentioned earlier was named “WITH A ROLLING STONE”. Another attractive feature is that this extremely cheerful show ends with a surprise, “House Of The Rising Sun” from the first album (although it would be better to say that it is more familiar from the Animals than Dylan). Also, the news of Chuck Berry’s death was just recently reported, but you can’t miss Petty and the Heartbreakers’ cover of “Bye Bye Johnny.” After this hot and long show spanning three discs, rare performances from Philadelphia and Kansas City are recorded as bonus material. Among them are the first live performance of the local song “Kansas City,” and the only performance of “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” in 1986. However, the Dylan heard on these is a completely different person from the hot atmosphere at MSG. In addition, all the bonus recordings are very good audience recordings, so the difference in the level of power is even more obvious. The main MSG performance is so hot that such a difference is clearly noticeable. The legendary day on the 1986 tour, when Dylan was so upper, is finally released on CD!
