Description
A super rare first appearance sound source from the 1986 performance in Japan that Dylan performed with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is now available. The True Confession Tour, which began in Australia in February 1986 with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, stopped in Japan in March for four performances. This title includes remastered recordings of Dylan and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ performances at Budokan on the final day and the pre-performance at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, all from wonderful audience recordings. The set list for this performance had a solo part by Dylan and a part only by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but they are not included here. The content focuses on the collaboration between Bob Dylan and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. This editing made it possible to additionally record the performance at the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium, but rather this sound source is very valuable and is the first sound source that was recently discovered. Only the 8 tracks recorded here have been unearthed, but in the climax scene in the second half of the live performance, Dylan’s instrumental performance, including a lip service to his Japanese fans, became a hot topic. Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou)” and the grand finale that continues with “Heaven’s Door” are tear-jerking. As Dylan later reflected in his autobiography, he highly praised Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the time, saying, “They were at the peak of their career,” and he respectfully introduces the band even during live performances. With a band like that supporting the foundation, it’s no wonder they’re in a good mood. In Dylan’s recent performances in Japan, there are almost no speaking scenes, but back then Dylan was talkative, and between songs he would often say things like “Domo, domo, domo” to lighten the mood. In such an atmosphere, there is nothing wrong with a performance supported by a reliable band, and the set list is full of unusual songs, perhaps with the Heartbreakers in mind, including Ry Cooder’s “Across the Borderline” This is a rare cover that is rarely played.
