Description

The 1963 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival was a turning point in Bob Dylan’s career. The timing of his appearance at the festival was perfect, as he was suddenly in the limelight after the release of the masterpiece “FREEWHEELIN’ BOB DYLAN” and the timeless masterpiece “Blowin’ In The Wind”. In fact, this was the beginning of Dylan’s rapid advance in the folk era. Two years later, he would completely change the folk festival with his band, but at this point he was performing in front of a huge audience like never before, and it was really amusing to hear him take the stage with such a confident atmosphere. His first appearance at Newport has been released in various formats, including a festival compilation and, in recent years, the DVD “THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR. LIVE AT THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL 1963-1965”, which compiled Dylan’s performance scenes. Some songs, such as “Playboys And Playgirls”, which was heard on the former compilation, are now difficult to obtain. It’s a pity that the official record of the decisive stage where Dylan grabbed stardom has been treated as such. In addition, there are still many undiscovered takes, and it was the most difficult year to grasp the whole picture of Dylan’s Newport appearances. This gift is a compilation of all the recordings that are currently available from Dylan’s 1963 appearances that have been released in pieces. Even so, the recording is less than 40 minutes long, but the fresh and earnest performance of Dylan that can be heard here is a precious experience that can only be experienced at his first Newport appearance. Moreover, the repertoire that symbolizes Dylan at this point is lined up. Among them, “Blowin’ In The Wind” was not performed by him alone, but as a chorus finale accompanied by folk stars of the time such as Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and PPM. It can be said that even this scene alone clearly shows how much attention he attracted. Furthermore, the scene where Dylan joins in on “We Shall Overcome,” a song that could be said to be a symbol of the heyday of folk music (is it easier for enthusiasts to understand if you call it the song sung at ZEP928?), is also valuable, as it symbolizes the folk music of that time. And the last song recorded is “With God On Our Side” with Baez, which is a duet between the two of them on her stage, but it is a tear-jerking one that combines what was originally incomplete and divided into two parts on the DVD mentioned above. Since it is a historic stage, it is an appearance that is waiting for further excavation, but please enjoy the full CD that can be enjoyed as a sampler of the folk era with perfect sound quality recorded on a perfect soundboard, and take your time to enjoy the too-fresh stage of the sparkling Dylan (lol) who had just come into the limelight.
