Description
In 1989, the peak of the so-called Never Ending Tour, which featured GE Smith as guitarist, there was very little footage of the US in the summer, and it is no exaggeration to say that the visual aspect was shrouded in mystery. In addition, Dylan’s stage at this time had a wide range of repertoire, whether it was his own songs or covers, and even non-enthusiasts would want to see Dylan playing such rare numbers. So this time we bring you an audience shot of the stage in Ontario in July. The original was a VHS that was circulating among some core collectors, but Dylan’s enthusiast project “DVDylan” literally made it into a DVD version. The audience shot, which was originally a distant focus, has been blown up, so there is not enough of a close feeling to clearly see Dylan’s expression on stage, and it seems a little rough. Still, he and GE Smith are captured in a stable state from start to finish, and it is surprisingly calm and enjoyable for an audience shot from 1989. Of course, the audio was meticulously dubbed from the audience recording of the same day, thanks to DVDylan’s specialty. The opening song was “Trouble,” which is typical of this time of year, and the video and audio were often interrupted, making it seem like a problem as the song title suggests. After that, the shooting angle settled down and the sound quality was excellent. Similarly, as a specialty of DVDylan, still images were patched into the parts that were not filmed or where there was a lot of camera shake. It seems that they were unable to film the last two songs, so they were still images from start to finish. Apart from these viewing processes, the interesting one was “Early Morning Rain,” a rare cover of the day. The moment the song started, DVDylan added a rain effect of its own. It’s a bit lame (lol), but now it’s a pleasant production. In addition, it is also valuable that in this song, GE is dedicated to backing and Dylan plays the guitar solo, which is perfectly captured. Furthermore, in the second half of the live performance, in “Silvio,” you can even see the two of them sharing the solo. But the best of the best is “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)”. It’s a song that he had sung on stage many times before, but on this day, Dylan forgot the lyrics. He was stuck at a loss for words and kept playing the guitar until he remembered the lyrics. This rare scene in his own famous song is a must-see even for those who are not enthusiasts! And 10 years ago, “DVDylan”, which played an important role in the online Dylan collector world, has been inactive for a long time, and this video is a rare audience shot of Dylan in the summer of 1989 that cannot be seen on YouTube.
