Description

Bob Dylan’s 1988 tour was a very popular time for maniacs, but his releases had stopped in recent years, and he made a comeback. This time, the release after a long time is an ultra audience album that captures the early stages of the tour with the highest sound quality. The early part of this tour was during the 1988 tour, where the quality of the performances was already high on average, and it was fun for Dylan to stand on stage with his own rebirth and the lively performance of his new band. There was a time when I had no choice. In addition, there was a surprise that Neil Young participated as a guest guitarist for the first three shows of the tour. The circumstances that led him to appear on Dylan’s stage in succession have not been disclosed, but Neil also returned to his old company Reprise Records after his lost Geffen Records era and was trying to regain himself. There is something interesting about the fact that these two legends coincidentally made a comeback at the same time and were able to perform together on stage. Of those three shows with Neil Young, the best items were released at Concord on June 7th and Mountain View on June 11th, but 10 was not blessed with CD items. Berkeley of the day. Ironically, in the LP era, the two-disc set “SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES” that recorded the Berkeley show was the first to be made into a sound record from the 1988 tour with Neil’s participation. However, in the CD era, only the items from this LP were released. This was also in the early 1990s, so it’s no surprise that even back then it wasn’t taken seriously by enthusiasts. However, no new items have appeared since then. Among traders, audience recordings with far better sound quality than the previous LP (with the proviso “different recording than bootleg “SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES” among traders) are widely available as transfers from master tapes. When I thought about it, it was no wonder. It’s been almost 30 years (!) since the release of the LP, and we’re frustrated that new items still haven’t appeared, so we’ve finally released the best version. For this release, the original source was an audience recording that easily surpassed the sound quality of the LP mentioned above. The sound quality of this is just amazing. Not only is the sound image impressive, but the closeness of Dylan’s singing voice is like a soundboard. I can’t believe that such a high quality audience recording of the 1988 tour had been overlooked until now. In fact, the sound quality was so high that there was no need for any equalization at the time of release. Even in 1988, which was already a year of mass production of great performances, it is very attractive to be able to listen to the performance at the beginning of the tour, which was full of momentum, with a sound quality like a sound board. From the opening “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, not only the band including GE Smith, who is the driving force behind this tour, but also Dylan are at full throttle. Riding on this momentum, songs such as “Joey” and “Absolutely Sweet Marie”, which had not been part of the stage repertoire until then, were performed with plenty of momentum. This is 1988. Furthermore, “San Francisco Bay Blues” appeared in the acoustic corner, which was played only by Dylan and GE Smith, who had been highly evaluated since then. A folk cover that Paul and Clapton each played in their “Unplugged” appearances. Dylan’s version is also from 1988, and the performance at the bridge benefit involving Neil Young has been released on soundboards in the past, but this version is definitely better in both the performance and Dylan’s singing. . After the acoustic part ended, Neil Young appeared in the band. The first song he played when he joined was the blues-like “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry”, which I think was the best choice. In fact, Neil also plays the guitar solo to his heart’s content, and the audience is very excited about it. When this song became “Like A Rolling Stones,” Dylan shouted in an overly energetic manner, as if inspired by his guitar. Lastly, the 1988 tour had a shorter stage performance than Dylan’s previous tours, which usually left room for bonus tracks, but we took advantage of this to include rare performances from the same period. Masu. All of them are rare repertoire from the August leg, two months after Berkeley, but the first one is “Seeing The Real You At Last” in LA. Since then, this song has been praised as “a perfect song for the band on the 1988 tour,” but it has only been played a few times, and this take on this day will be the first to be released on CD. The next song, “We Three (My Echo, My Shadow And Me),” is an R&B cover that was performed in 1986, and was heard on “BUDOKAN 1986 2ND NIGHT” released last month, and also on “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1986 FINAL NIGHT.” Familiar to maniacs. However, this time the bonus was a rare acoustic version that was performed in Carlsbad in 1988. This is the last live performance to date, and although it has been released before due to its rarity, it is incomparable to past items due to its accurate pitch and improved sound quality. And the final song, “She’s About A Mover,” is a signature song by Doug Zahm, who has been with Dylan since the 1960s, and Zahm himself jumped in on the stage in Edmonton, Canada. Dylan himself would sing this song in memory of Zahm after he passed away, but this is an extremely valuable take in which Zahm himself sang with Dylan and the band in the background. Moreover, the melody is perfect for the band in 1988, and it is recorded from a rare audience recording that is not easily available among traders. In this way, in addition to the best sound source of the main part, if the valuable performance is added as a bonus and it becomes too luxurious, this is definitely a masterpiece representing the 1988 tour.
