Description
Since the remix version of Bob Dylan’s rare masterpiece “HIGHWAY 61 REMIXED” was released, there must be many enthusiasts who were looking forward to the release of the remix version of his next album “BLONDE ON BLONDE”. Of course this is possible, as a new mix was also created for the release of the 2015 Collector’s Edition session collection. In the first place, “BLONDE ON BLONDE” is even called a masterpiece, and it boasts a special long-selling album among Dylan’s albums. As a result, the album master released in 1966 quickly fell into disrepair. It is also an unusual album in that the mix was re-mixed from time to time. In the first place, a new mix was created as early as the LP era, and several remix versions were also created for the CD. However, all of the conventional mixes were created with the aim of reproducing the original 1966 mix, and the stereo image is not significantly different. On the other hand, even in the CD era, old-fashioned stereo mixes with extreme separation reminiscent of the 1960s were still being produced. Even the current mix, created in 2003 for use with SACD, follows that image. In that respect, the new stereo mix created for the 2015 session collection box has a boldly different stereo image and the finish of the mix itself. “I Want You” is a representative song on the album that makes you understand this difference right away. In the previous mix, each instrument was extremely separated from left to right, and the patter of the drums was noticeable. However, in the 2015 mix, the separation of instruments was suddenly weakened, and the balance was changed to center around Dylan’s singing voice. However, the overall sound quality is solid, so the impression is finally different from the conventional mix. And for this release, I think it’s also valuable that they used a version of the song before the lead guitar was overdubbed, which could only be heard on that huge collector’s edition. As the song says, the finish has a completely different feel from the previous mix, and the appeal of the 2015 mix is that it has a solid overall texture, while still bringing Dylan’s singing voice to the forefront. For example, “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat,” which was particularly thin and had poor sound quality on the album, suddenly changed into a heavier mix. As I could say with “HIGHWAY 61 REMIXED”, the great thing about the 2015 version is that it utilizes the latest technology to create an analog feel rather than a digital feel. Another song that suddenly changed my performance image was “Obviously Five Believers.” It was originally a song with a roaring guitar riff, so the traditional mix had a balance that made the guitar stand out more or less, but in the 2015 version, the keyboard sound stands out more, which is interesting. And “Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine)” is recorded in the version before the intro was edited. This is also a valuable thing that could only be heard in the collector’s edition. As a finishing touch, the official stereo mix includes the bonus single “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?”, which was first released in 2015. But that’s not all. This time, it has been released as two CDs, as the original album was in a two-disc format. Taking advantage of this volume, we compiled different takes and sessions on the second disc. Thanks to this editing, he was able to create an alternate album where you can listen to different takes of all the songs in the album’s original order. Of course, in editing it, we carefully selected rare alternate takes that were not included in the two-disc or six-disc sets that are still available today, and can only be heard in the collector’s edition. Naturally, the finale is a different take (take 3, by the way) of “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.” For example, “One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)” is played in take 15 with a different tempo arrangement, and take 1 of “Temporary Like Achilles” and “Absolutely Sweet Marie” rehearsal are played with different key arrangements. And so on. However, for the famous songs “I Want You” and “Just Like A Woman”, two different takes are adopted, each with a different singing style and arrangement of Dylan. We have carefully edited the song so that you can enjoy the feeling of a different take that you can understand with just one listen. The same goes for the early take of “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat,” which was recorded with sound effects but was shelved. And these are also all rare sound sources that can only be heard in the collector’s edition. After an alternate album that thoroughly compiles different takes of the songs included in the album, it also covers sessions of unreleased songs from the same period. Among them, “She’s Your Lover Now” is an excerpt from a rare take only available in the Collector’s Edition, with a session scene of a ballad arrangement that is completely different from the takes heard in the past. In this way, the content is far more fulfilling than the previous “HIGHWAY 61 REMIXED”, and while you can listen to the remix version on the first disc, the second disc is full of different takes in the same order as the album. Amazing content. Of course, it goes without saying that the sound quality is concerned.
