Description

“HEADLESS CROSS”, the album where Tony Martin’s BLACK SABBATH showed their true value with Cozy Powell, is still highly popular among fans even after nearly 25 years since its release. The title song “Headless Cross” and “When Death Calls” were always performed on the tours accompanying the album, and they have been featured as standard songs in SABBATH live shows in the ’90s and in Tony Martin’s solo live shows in recent years. However, there are many other great songs on “HEADLESS CROSS” besides those two songs. The excellent quality of the content makes fans want to hear other songs. This work “CALL OF THE WILD” is a full-length high-quality audience recording of the third show of the “HEADLESS CROSS” tour, held at “Merriweather Post Pavilion” in Columbia, South Carolina on June 4, 1989. You can enjoy famous songs such as “Call Of The Wild”, a rare number only available at the beginning of this tour, and “Devil And Daughter”, which is popular among fans, with a stable audience sound. Although there is a slight distance between the stage and the taper, the sound visibility is excellent throughout the live performance, and there is no noticeable cracking or distortion, making it easy to listen to. Furthermore, you can hear each person’s play with a solid sense of separation, so you can enjoy the set list at the beginning of the tour without stress. Another good thing about this work is that the performance is excellent. The members’ enthusiasm to “play a live show that does not shame the name of SABBATH” is felt in the excellent performance, and from the opening “Headless Cross”, the rhythm section of newly joined Cozy and Neil Murray shows a strong play. In this recording, you can hear Cozy’s drumming firmly on a per-note basis. Iommi’s stable guitar play is no longer necessary. In “Neon Knights” and “Children Of The Sea”, he shows off a fulfilling solo, and together with Martin’s vocals, the melodious sound will allow you to enjoy a mysterious worldview. The main highlight of this work is “Call Of The Wild” as the title suggests. As the lyrics of the chorus part say, this song was originally titled “Hero”, but since OZZY OSBOURNE had recorded a song of the same name on the album “NO REST FOR THE WICKED” at the same time, the song title was replaced, making it a song with a bad reputation. However, the performance you can hear on this recording is so wonderful that it makes you forget such “background”. The mellow vocals of Martin flow supplely on the rhythm solidified by Cozy and Neil will attract the ears of the listener. It is a pity that this song was dropped in the set after only a few performances. The middle part of the show includes “When Death Calls” and “War Pigs” from “The Mob Rules”, as well as “Die Young” and “Black Sabbath” at the beginning of disc 2. The contrast between lyricism and heaviness is also impressive, giving the show a lively flow. The highlight of the second half is “Devil and Daughter”, which was only performed on the tour that year. The take that can be heard on this recording has Martin’s vocals in good condition and is easy to listen to, making it a delight for fans. The end of the show features a medley of “Iron Man” and “Children Of The Grave”, followed by a dramatic suite of “Heaven And Hell” and “Paranoid”, bringing the show to a dramatic close. The North American tour of the year ended with the Cleveland performance recorded on “HEADLESSIN AGORA”, and from autumn onwards the show will travel from Europe to Japan. When SABBATH came to Japan for the first time in nine years, they had already dropped “Devil and Daughter” from the set, but instead performed a show with the best selection of songs, including “The Shining”. The set list was great, in line with the expectations of fans, but in terms of the content of the promotional live for “HEADLESS CROSS”, the set recorded here is actually better. This work, which allows you to enjoy precious songs with excellent sound, is undoubtedly a must-listen for all SABBATH fans.
