Description

The Glenn Hughes era is a hidden gem in the history of BLACK SABBATH. This masterpiece live album is an unexpected upgrade. The best masterpiece was recorded at “March 21, 1986 Cleveland Performance”. Yes, it is an upgraded version of the famous album “FIRST & BEST” that once appeared on the Shades label. Before we get into the details, let’s start with some basic knowledge about the Glenn era. Glenn has teamed up with Tony Iommi three times in “SEVENTH STAR”, “THE 1996 DEP SESSIONS”, and “FUSED”, but they only appeared together on stage in 1986 (5 performances) and 2010 (1 performance). In 2010, he was a guest at the Ronnie James Dio memorial performance, sharing it with Jorn Lande, so there were only five performances in his 50-year history as the official lead singer. First of all, let’s look back at the flow of 1986 and check the show’s position. [“SEVENTH STAR” released on January 28th]・March 14th: Rehearsal・March 21st-26th: North America #1 (5 performances) ←★Here★ “Glenn fired: Ray Gillan joins”・March 29th – April 19th: North America #2 (14 performances) May 21st – June 4th: UK (12 performances) [Production of “THE ETERNAL IDOL” started in October] [No. 1 sound of the Glenn era [Updated the highest peak] This is BLACK SABBATH of 1986. Glenn thought he was making a friendship appearance at Iommi’s solo performance, but before he knew it, he was joining Sabbath on tour as the official singer. Not only was he not satisfied with the circumstances, but his drug habit worsened and he also suffered a fractured orbital floor due to a fight before the tour. The tour began with both body and mind in tatters, and he quit after just five performances. The Cleveland performance of this work is the first performance of “North America #1”. It was the first performance with Glenn. “FIRST & BEST” recorded at such a show was “first and best” as its name suggests. There are several reasons why it’s “the best,” but first and foremost, the sound is amazing. As a matter of fact, there are audience recordings of all five performances (+ rehearsals) that Glenn participated in, but most of them are current ones. For many years, I was at the level of “I’m just grateful to be able to listen.” “FIRST & BEST”, which appeared in 2010, ended that history. Although it is a vintage audience with vivid cheers, the beauty of its clear sound is on a different level from other performances. The performance by the five people, including the keyboardists, is clear and vivid down to the last note, so much so that you can almost feel the metallic luster. While other recordings are at the level of documentary materials that require the will to “listen somehow,” “FIRST & BEST” is at the level of a musical work that you can completely immerse yourself in and be intoxicated by its splendor. The masterpiece “FIRST & BEST” was sold out and out of print while it was extremely popular. Even now, 10 years after its release, it continues to be one of the best masterpieces of the Glenn era. And, this work is a top-of-the-line updated album that has brushed up such a masterpiece with meticulous mastering. The overwhelming thing is that it feels even more crisp and separate. Although “FIRST & BEST” was recorded by Glen, it was vivid, but the sound was undeniably lumpy, and the vocals in particular tended to be buried in the band sound. However, in this work, each instrument stands out clearly, down to the outline, and is neatly separated. You can hear the nuances of each word in the vocals, and the drums shine like a soundboard. Digital remastering is not magic, and there is a huge difference between the sound that can be improved and the sound that cannot be improved, but this recording was fortunately the latter. The sound that was originally No. 1 during the Glenn era has been completely peeled off and reborn. [Famous album with No. 1 number of songs and performance] The show drawn with such No. 1 sound is also the highest peak of the Glenn era. As mentioned above, Glenn suffered a fractured orbital floor in a fight before the tour, and the effects of that were getting worse day by day. In the last few days, I was so exhausted that I had to excuse myself during the MC by saying, “I have a cold.” However, this work is the first day. Although she had already suffered a broken bone, she was still able to hear her original beautiful voice. Even more decisive is the set. There are some delicious and extremely rare songs that are created through trial and error that can only be achieved on the first day. Here, let’s organize the contents of the full show. Ozzy Era (5 songs)・Black Sabbath・Paranoid: War Pigs/Iron Man (★)/Paranoid・Master of Reality: Children Of The Grave Ronnie Era (4 songs)・Heaven & Hell: Children Of The Sea/Neon Knights/Heaven And Hell・Devil’s Law: The Mob Rules Others (5 songs + α)・Seventh Star: Danger Zone/Angry Heart (★)/Heart Like A Wheel/No Stranger To Love/Turn To Stone・Medley: Symptom Of The Universe/Sweet Leaf/Zero The Hero/Sphinx (The Guardian)/Seventh Star *Note: The “★” mark is an extremely rare song from Glenn’s era that was only available on this day. …and it looks like this. In terms of balance, it feels like it’s divided into three parts: “Ozzy songs,” “Ronnie songs,” and “new songs.”If the new songs are valuable, the classics sung by Glenn are also rare. Among them, “Iron Man” and “Angry Heart” are extremely rare. Glenn sang “Iron Man” only on this day later and earlier, and “Angry Heart” was played only on this day in the entire history of Sabbath spanning half a century. Moreover, even if these two songs are cut in other performances, there are no additional songs, and “All the songs of Glenn SABBATH” can be suppressed with this one work. Tony Iommi and Glenn Hughes were partners three times and were a “hidden great duo”. This is the pinnacle live album where you can enjoy their full show. The number of songs, the performance, and the sound are the best…A new masterpiece that updates this iconic record to the highest peak. Masterpiece audience recording of “March 21, 1986 Cleveland Performance”. A brush-up of the masterpiece “FIRST & BEST”, which became extremely popular as the pinnacle work of the Glenn Hughes era. Furthermore, the sense of clarity and separation has been greatly improved, and each instrument is neatly separated, and even the outline of the vocals, which tended to be buried in the band sound, stands out clearly. Not only the sound but also the show was the best, and “Iron Man” and “Angry Heart” that could not be heard at other performances were performed, and Glenn, who has lost his voice due to injury, was doing well since it was the first day. In every sense, this is a masterpiece that stands at the pinnacle of the Glenn era Sabbath.
