What I wanted to convey was the miraculous and overwhelming energy that could only have occurred at that time and place! The live performance at the Star Club, famous as the culmination of the early Beatles’ Hamburg days, is now available with a powerful sound that is different from any recording that has been released so far! This is the second release in the original demix and remaster series produced following the highly popular Budokan live performance. The Beatles’ Hamburg tour, which took place intermittently from August 1960 to the end of 1962, was based in St. Pauli, the notorious entertainment district of the port city of West Germany, which had miraculously recovered from the pain of defeat and shown incredible economic growth. It is not hard to imagine how the impact that spending his sensitive teenage years and early twenties in this land, a mass of energy swirling with “decadence,” “vulgarity,” and “violence,” which are highly compatible with the primal impulses of rock and roll, had on the growth of the newborn Beatles, and it is no wonder that John said, “He nurtured and shaped the Beatles as a rock band.” The best existing master recording of the Star Club performance in December 1962, the final chapter of this Hamburg tour, just after Ringo officially joined the band, was demixed using the latest AI in 2024. The materials separated into multiple tracks such as vocals, guitar, bass, and drums were reconstructed into an overwhelmingly balanced stereo sound. Furthermore, the detailed sound was polished to the utmost by meticulous remastering work, and this is a completely original Star Club live performance supervised by the label. The separation and positioning of each part is astounding, on a different level from other demixed sound sources that have been available so far, and the power of the sound will take your breath away. It’s like you’re enjoying a live performance from the front row, whereas you used to watch it from the back of the venue. The live performance, which is bursting with wild youth, is unique to this time. This is a must-listen work that vividly brings to life the image of the four young people who grew up in Hamburg over the course of three years. After the Beatles’ performance in the main part, the performances of other bands who performed on the same Star Club stage are digitally remastered. If you listen to this as well, you may get a better feel for the atmosphere of the Hamburg rock and roll scene during the British Invasion. In addition, the bonus track includes a soundboard recording of a rehearsal held at the Cavern in Liverpool in 1962, also demixed and remastered. At George’s strong request, this rare session featuring Ringo, who would soon join the band as a new member, on drums has been recorded for the first time in stereo.
