Another concept of “MONOLONGER” by Lord Reith, who achieved a shocking stereo conversion of the BBC radio sound source, is from the alternate takes and session scenes that have been officially released, or the rare sound sources that are spreading unofficially. He was able to thoroughly convert something that was only available in monaural recordings or in a monophonic state into stereo. This “STUDIO SESSIONS 1962-1969: IN SPECTRAL STEREO” is a collection of them on two discs. The content is an easy-to-understand stereo feeling that is comparable to “BBC SESSIONS 1963-1964: IN SPECTRAL STEREO” which will be released at the same time, but it is still a very enjoyable content. First of all, the first disc is full of rare studio takes and stereo versions of sessions that were officially released. The core of this is the take that was included in each “ANTHOLOGY” series. It is natural that the sound sources before and after the debut were originally monaural recordings, but the fact that the sound source of the EMI audition recorded at the beginning has been reborn in a splendid stereo state gives me goosebumps. Who would have thought that one day we would be able to hear Pete Best’s version of “Love Me Do” on the stereo? Current Demix technology is able to naturally separate instruments to this extent. In the same way, even the oldest recording takes of “How Do You Do It” and “Please Please Me” are firmly converted into stereo. However, the real value of the demix realized by Lord Reith on the first disc is the session scenery and different takes from 1964 to 1965 heard in each “ANTHOLOGY”. It was strange that all of them were remixed in monaural or near-mono. Lord Reith noticed this and made each sound source into stereo. Not only that, for example, take 2 of “Kansas City” eliminates the glaring echo that was applied when recording “ANTHOLOGY 1”, and even completely erases the backing chorus that was transplanted from the album version (take 1). Although it didn’t reach that level, it was suppressed considerably, and the effort it took to get it back to the state it was in during the original session was tear-jerking. On the other hand, Take 1 of “Can’t Buy Me Love” is still a take that can only be heard on the playback sound source that picks up the sound from studio speakers (so to speak, audience recording state in the studio), but even then it should be converted to stereo. I was surprised that he showed it as such. Regarding the second disc, we have realized the stereo version of the rare take that has been popularized through unofficial items for a long time, but from the perspective of enthusiasts, this one may be more appealing. For example, the fact that “Your Mother Should Know” and “I Am The Walrus”, which were heard on Yellow Dog’s classic album “ACATATES”, were converted to stereo before they were overdubbed, is intriguing. You will be amazed at the result when they are transformed into stereo. The complete version of “It’s All Too Much”, which is a more recent discovery, and the stereo long version of “Revolution 1”, which appeared about 10 years ago and became a hot topic among maniacs, are also wonderfully finished. In between, he attempts to convert even the most maniacal sound sources into stereo for the first and second discs, including the vocals of “Help!”, which is famous for being heard only in the original movie audio. Take, based on the rehearsal scene of “Step Inside Love” that Paul sent to Cilla Black (another wonderful degree of separation!), or the Beatles recording when Ringo appeared on George Martin’s TV show and sang it. Lord Reith’s obsession with mania, such as converting a different version of “Octopus’s Garden” into stereo, can be called a milestone in the “SPECTRAL STEREO” challenge that Lord Reith has released so far. And even in the recent official Deluxe Edition series, although it is not as bad as in “ANTHOLOGY”, some sound sources have been converted to stereo even for takes that had a monaural finish. For example, the session sound source of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)” and “A Day In The Life” of “SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND”, or “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that George played alone. Perfectly converted to stereo. Furthermore, Lord Reith, who was dissatisfied with the finish of the version released last year, reborn “Come And Get It” with a wonderful sense, making it more interesting than ever. Although it is a stereo version of different takes and sessions, it is still enjoyable for everyone from beginners to enthusiasts!
