Description
The rooftop concert, which was effectively The Beatles’ last live performance, had already been made clear by the sound recorded by the film crew for the filming of the films “LET IT BE” and “GET BACK”, but I wanted to listen to it in stereo as much as possible… “THE ROOFTOP CONCERT” was a compilation of such maniacs’ wishes, using the sound sources that were in circulation up until 2019. This became a best-seller, released in two versions, “black jacket” and “white jacket”, and was a masterpiece that quenched the thirst of maniacs who were hungry for a release that did not take concrete action in the memorable year of 50 years since the rooftop. However, that is now a thing of the past. From November last year to the present, the situation regarding the rooftop has evolved into a favorable situation as if the previous 50 years were a lie. The volume is incomparable to the movie “LET IT BE” in 1970, and the entire picture of the legendary concert can now be enjoyed with video. Last fall, Rooftop was released with a priority on the video, but as soon as this year, a live album was released. It’s truly a dream situation. That being said, even those fulfilling releases did not capture all the moments of Rooftop that the existing audio sources captured. While Rooftop was the result of seeking the scene that should be the climax of the movie and a desperate measure for the live activities that could not be realized, there was no plan to release all of it as a live album or video. It was only done as a part of the recording for the album – which later became part of “GET BACK” and “LET IT BE”. Therefore, there were omissions in both the film crew for the movie and the multi-track recording for the album. If it is finally released as a live album, the complete Rooftop can be reproduced by filling in the missing parts in the multi-track parts with the filmed audio. In addition, in the movie, interviews with passersby and battles with police officers (lol) are inserted during and between performances in both “LET IT BE” and “GET BACK”. So this time, we have put together a complete live album of the rooftop concert, combining the multi-track parts of the concert that were released with the mono sound source of the film crew. In the first place, the top priority for the multi-track was to get the take for the album, and this can be seen from the fact that Glyn Johns, who supervised the multi-track recording in the studio, gave instructions to the rooftop remotely in last year’s movie. Thanks to this, it is natural that there is no multi-recording at all for the scenes before the live start, let alone between songs. In that case, the scene before the live start had to rely on the film crew’s recording, and in last year’s movie, the sound was stereo-ized using film crew recording and the latest technology. Before such a climax event, the film crew increased the number of cameras, but still could not capture the scene before the live start. As a result, in the scene where they played only the touch of “Get Back” as a warm-up before the live start, the sound of the film crew’s recorder waiting to capture the street pattern was only captured as a distant sound source. However, the video of that scene was also well shot on the rooftop. So in last year’s movie, instead of using the distant sound source of the camera crew, they chopped up the second take of “Get Back” after the live performance started, made it into a pseudo warm-up version, and then put it on the video. It may have been a disappointment for the enthusiasts who were excited that “Finally the warm-up is in stereo?”, but there’s nothing we can do about it. This time, the sound source of the conventional camera crew was combined, so those who only know the sound of last year’s video may be surprised that the actual warm-up scene was a completely different performance. Another thing that the camera crew on the rooftop couldn’t capture, let alone the multi-track, was the scene where John strummed “I Want You” between the two takes of “Get Back”. It can be heard from far away behind the camera crew who started the interview on the street, so it’s inevitable that this scene was cut. In this way, there are so many scenes that were only captured by the recording of the camera crew on the street, and for “God Save The Queen”, which finally came to be heard in multi-track stereo sound quality this year and delighted enthusiasts all over the world, the longest version was realized by combining it with the camera crew sound source. It is easy to see how John begins to play the phrase of the British national anthem, and the band follows suit. The film crew on the rooftop was unable to capture this scene (it was clearly a different scene in last year’s film), and instead caught it in the scene where the multi-track was played back in the studio downstairs after the live performance (the sound coming from the studio speakers). Thus, while the multi-track recording parts revealed this year are the main focus, the scenes that are not there are thoroughly adjusted using the film crew’s sound source. The true “complete version” of Rooftop will be released. The first disc contains this complete Rooftop, and the second disc contains only the multi-track parts that made enthusiasts go wild. This is not just a sound record, but is based on the high-resolution version, so there is no room for error. A live album that completely recreates the legend of January 30, 1969, including the parts that have not been fully reproduced in either the video or sound source of the popular Rooftop, will finally be released.
