Description

Regarding the Beatles’ pre-debut sound source, the online release called “KICKS KUDOS AND CASH” by Lord Reith has been useful for the past few years. This is a compilation of all their existing pre-debut sound sources using the best sources, and has been updated several times. Perhaps because of this, even though it was so convenient that one piece was enough, it was difficult to see it being released as an item. “KICKS KUDOS AND CASH” (hereinafter referred to as “KKAC”) has been updated many times and has reached the stage of completion, but the latest version was released in February. . The main change is the addition of fragments from the earliest TV appearances that surprised enthusiasts around the world at the end of last year. Although this has already been released as a bonus of “PLEASE PLEASE ME 2019 SPECTRAL STEREO REMIX SECOND EDITION”, it fits well in the Beatles’ earliest sound source collection. Even so, no matter how many Beatles they are, I can’t help but be surprised that so much pre-debut sound source was left behind. Isn’t it amazing that the performance from the fateful moment when John and Paul met remains? Although it may be an important day in music history, the Quarrymen at that time were just a rural student band. It is not a matter of foresight that someone recorded the performance. Of course, it is an audience recording that captured an amateur band in 1957 with the equipment of the time, and although the performance and sound quality are not at a level that should be talked about, it is still amazing to be able to understand that it is John’s voice properly. For this CD, I cut out the BBC radio sound source that I appeared on before my debut (because there are a lot of culmination items regarding BBC). This makes it easy to handle as it fits perfectly onto two discs. If “KKAC” itself were distributed to CD as is, the Decca Audition sound source would end up spanning two discs. All the more, I hope you will be able to realize the benefits of this re-editing. In addition to simply compiling the best sources, the charm of “KKAC” is that Lord Reith’s specialty center mix is applied to the sound source that served as Tony Sheridan’s backing in 1961. If you’re not good at it, it’s a Sheridan sound source with better sound quality than the EMI recordings made after his debut, so the center mix will shine again. In addition, Lord Reith created a mix that pushed out the Beatles’ performance by eliminating Sheridan’s vocals for two songs, “My Bonnie” and “Why,” but this was moved to the position of a bonus. Speaking of Sheridan’s recordings, “Sweet Georgia Brown” was recorded in 1962 to fulfill the remainder of his contract, and “KKAC” included both a mix by Lord Reith without his singing voice and a center mix. However, for this release, the non-song backing is treated as a bonus and has been moved to the end of the disc. Certainly, there are things that can be listened to easily if the early TV appearances are included after each sound source at the Cavern Club in the second half of 1962. This is probably the aim of the latest version of “KKAC”. In the first place, the second disc contains two types of studio recordings, Decca Audition and EMI Audition, in which they brought their performances to the forefront for the first time, so it is very satisfying to listen to. Although it is a familiar sound source for a long time, I can only say that it is fortunate that such a solid recording was left before his debut. The bonus on the second disc includes an excerpt from when he opened for Roy Orbison in May 1963 after his debut, which appeared at auction a few years ago. Although this was an audience recording, the sound quality was surprisingly good, and it was a shocking discovery that revealed that he was still playing “Some Other Guy” live at this point. “KKAC” included one song performed by Orbison himself, but here only two Beatles songs were included.
