Description

The latest definitive version of the much-talked-about phantom album “GET BACK” is finally here! Two years ago, when “GET BACK COMPLETE EDITION”, a compilation of different versions of The Beatles’ unreleased albums, was released, I said, “The album itself will never be officially released in the future,” but as you know, this month the album will finally be officially released. Who would have thought that the day would come. When enthusiasts were thinking that the day had come when the “GET BACK” items that had been released countless times on LP and CD would be retired, it seems that the release will be a “mixture of the 1969 and 1970 versions,” and what particularly upset enthusiasts around the world was the fact that when “For You Blue” was distributed as a preview before the release, it was the 1970 version mix. Isn’t this the kind of thing that would happen officially? However, the story doesn’t end there, and when it was released, the Japanese version contained the song in the 1969 version mix. However, some overseas versions and LPs are still the 1970 version, which makes it difficult to understand. At least, it was a blessing in disguise that “For You Blue,” which had the biggest difference in mix between the 1969 and 1970 versions, was recorded correctly on the Japanese version. Furthermore, there were many traces of multiple sources being spliced together, such as a sudden hiss noise only during the chatter between songs. Due to this situation, the various “GET BACK” items, which were thought to lose half their value after this release, have ironically survived. At least this official release was released as a more or less eclectic mix of the 1969 and 1970 versions, so the value of the items that contain each era in a complete set will not fade. The perfect item for this current situation is the “GET BACK COMPLETE EDITION” released in 2019, and it is an item that is needed now. However, this title is Sold Out. However, in this current situation, it is impossible to get this masterpiece, which is the culmination of “GET BACK”… so it has been decided to re-release it! Two years ago, “GET BACK” was compiled over four discs, but of course it is not just a reissue, and the contents have been reviewed in light of the current situation. First of all, the first disc is limited to the acetate produced on January 30th, which was the main recording, and the acetate part that was recorded as a bonus, which was a compilation of oldies jams called “Beatles Sunday”, was cut. Therefore, only the so-called “Get Back Mark 1” that Glyn Johns compiled on January 26th and 27th and created after the rooftop concert on the 30th was recorded. This was later the basis for the LP items in the “KUM BACK” direction, but the amazing finish that cleanly removed the noise inherent to acetate is still alive and well this time. Mark 1 will be the permanent best source. The second disc is the one that has been most updated in this re-release. Last time, we recorded “O.P.D.”, which is said to be the Beatles’ earliest underground LP, but since new items containing the same LP have appeared since the beginning of this year, this time instead of recording the LP, we created a version that reproduces the contents of the acetate before the completion of “GET BACK”, which is thought to be the basis of the LP. Speaking of “O.P.D.”, it is known among enthusiasts that it contains “Dig It”, which is not included in each “KUM BACK” item and has a longer recording time than the later completed version “GET BACK”, but that acetate was made in early May 1969. At this point, the content was almost close to the completed version of “GET BACK”, but one of the parts that was missing was the long “Dig It”. Another is that the scene after “Get Back” is also recorded for a long time. Unfortunately, the actual acetate made by Johns just before completion in early May has not been excavated. In addition, “O.P.D.” had a major drawback in that it only contained the Lch sound of the original stereo mix. So, the Dig It part, which was only included on the same board, was taken from the acetate of “Beatles Sunday”, the intro of Get Back was taken from the acetate of Mark 1, and even the chat part after the Get Back performance, which was still insufficient, was patched from the mono Nagra sound source recorded by the film crew of the movie “LET IT BE” (or “GET BACK” to be released next month), to restore Get Back Mark 2, which does not have the drawback of missing one channel, with a novel concept that has never been seen before. In other words, it is a perfect reproduction of the acetate that was the source of “O.P.D.”. There is a theory that the acetate leak was caused by John, which was mentioned in the official liner notes this time (and he did not deny it himself), so perhaps it was this version that he gave to the journalist. And the third and fourth discs include “GET BACK” from each era. The pitch, which was slightly slow, has been adjusted on both. Furthermore, the equalization has been slightly redone, and both have become warmer. In addition, the 1970 version has been repaired after the end of “Let It Be” when the keyboards are distorted (listen carefully to the left channel) and the reverberation is slightly missing. By precisely adjusting the pitch, the running time on the existing album master tape box and disc 4 of this album are perfectly consistent (please refer to the inside of the jacket for a photo of the tape box). Although this is a bit of a nerdy point, it shows that the album has been thoroughly revised rather than simply reissued. Ironically, with this official release, both the 1969 and 1970 versions are now needed as reference material. Moreover, the liner notes go into detail about how important Glyn Johns played a role, and the convenient thing about this title is that it covers even the acetates that appear in them. If you listen to it while reading it, you will be able to immerse yourself in it.
