Description
The Beatles’ 1963 Bournemouth performance, which surprised enthusiasts around the world a few months ago. The existence of this sound source had also been confirmed for some time, and as soon as the HMC label finally announced its release this year, the owner of the sound source released it on the Internet, just like Essen 66. However, the condition of the sound source was different for Bournemouth. The version on the Internet seemed to have a poor compatibility between the old reel and the deck that played it, and an unpleasant noise called “reel whine” occurred periodically from “Chains”. In contrast, there was no such noise on the HMC, but this time the sound quality itself deteriorated and the low pitch was left unattended… It was an unexpected state. Each of the two versions that appeared in this way had some kind of problem. Despite this, “Bournemouth & Walthamstow 1963”, which released the net version the fastest, was a huge hit. Therefore, for this M release, the unpleasant “reel whine” noise, which was the biggest problem with the net version, which has better sound quality, was thoroughly eliminated. When the two Bournemouth versions appeared two months ago, enthusiasts lamented that if the sound quality of the online version was free of noise, they would have no complaints… but finally, that wish has been fulfilled by the “reel-sounding” Beatles specialist Merseyside. Of course, the slow pitch has been adjusted perfectly. This precious sound source is different from the so-called audience recording recorded from the audience seats, and was recorded by a theater staff member near the stage for a fan friend. If it was from the audience seats, the fans’ screams would have been louder, if not as loud as in later years. Such circumstances were hidden behind the unexpectedly large and easy-to-listen-to state of the recording from 1963. And the set list is so interesting. It starts with “Thank You Girl,” where Paul greets the audience during the intro, and George sings two songs, which is really surprising. The peaceful atmosphere, especially the clapping that erupts when he sings “Chains,” is very pleasant. August 1963 was a few months away from the birth of Beatlemania, but at this point in time, the atmosphere was still peaceful. Thanks to this, it was only at this time that the repertoire of softly sung songs such as “A Taste Of Honey” and “Baby It’s You” was performed. Next is a recording from the tour with Roy Orbison in May, which was unearthed at the same time as Bournemouth and caused a stir. This recording was also previously put up for auction and its existence was confirmed. Since it was a joint tour, the Beatles’ performance time was short, but it is a valuable audience recording that captures “Some Other Guy” and “Please Please Me”, which cannot be heard in Bournemouth, and even Orbison’s stage. Of course, the high pitch is naturally adjusted. Both recordings are not just valuable historical excavations, but are surprisingly easy to listen to for audience recordings from 1963. And yet, since the valuable repertoire and arrangements mentioned above can be heard, a new release that corrects unnecessary noise and pitch errors was urgently needed for enthusiasts around the world. And as a bonus, it includes a remastered soundboard recording of the album’s big hit commemorative live performance at EMI, which was also unearthed a few years ago and caused a big stir. This time, the sound quality, which was a bit muffled, has been made easier to hear. The super rare recording of the in-house live performance, which is different from the usual live performance, is also included, and this is a bargain album that literally compiles the precious and newly excavated live recordings of The Beatles in 1963 in the best condition as a “Definitive Edition”!
