Description

A few months ago, The Beatles’ 1963 Bournemouth performance astonished music enthusiasts worldwide. The existence of this recording had also been confirmed for some time, and as soon as the HMC label finally announced its release earlier this year, the original owner, like Essen 66, uploaded it online. However, the condition of the Bournemouth recording was different. The online version appeared to be incompatible with the old reel and the playback deck, resulting in frequent, periodic, harsh “reel whine” noises, especially on “Chains.” The HMC version, on the other hand, had no such noise, but this time the sound quality itself deteriorated and the low pitch was ignored… Thus, each of the two versions had its own issues. Despite this, the first release of the online version, “Bournemouth & Walthamstow 1963,” was a huge hit. Therefore, for this M release, the harsh “reel whine” noise, the biggest problem with the online version, which had superior sound quality, was thoroughly eliminated. When two versions of the Bournemouth recording appeared two months ago, enthusiasts lamented that the sound quality of the online version would be perfect if it weren’t for the noise. Finally, that wish has been fulfilled by Merseyside, a Beatles specialist with a “reel ringer.” Of course, the slow pitch has been precisely adjusted. This precious recording differs from the so-called audience recordings made from the audience seats; it was recorded by a theater associate near the stage for a fan friend. If it had been recorded from the audience seats, the fans’ screams would have been louder, if not more so than in later years. This is the hidden story behind the surprisingly clear and easy-to-listen sound of this 1963 recording. And the set list is incredibly interesting. It begins with Paul greeting “Thank You Girl” during the intro, followed by two more songs by George, which is truly surprising. The harmonious atmosphere, especially the clapping that erupts during his performance of “Chains,” is especially endearing. August 1963 was just a few months away from the birth of Beatlemania, but the atmosphere was still tranquil. Thanks to this, it was precisely during this time that the band was able to showcase their mellow repertoire, including “A Taste of Honey” and “Baby It’s You.” Next up is a recording from the May tour with Roy Orbison, which was unearthed at the same time as the Bournemouth tour and sparked much buzz. This recording, too, had previously been auctioned and confirmed to exist. Because it was a joint tour, the Beatles’ performances are short, but this rare audience recording captures “Some Other Guy” and “Please Please Me,” songs not heard in Bournemouth, as well as Orbison’s performance onstage. Of course, any high pitch has been adjusted. Both recordings are not just valuable historical finds; they are surprisingly easy to listen to for 1963 audience recordings. Yet, given the precious repertoire and arrangements mentioned above, a new release with unnecessary noise and pitch corrections was urgently needed for enthusiasts worldwide. As a bonus, the album includes a remastered soundboard recording of the EMI in-house concert celebrating the album’s success, which was also unearthed a few years ago and caused quite a stir. This time, the sound quality, which had previously been a bit muffled, has been improved for a more audible experience. This highly-valued recording, featuring a completely different recording from the regular live performance, is also included. This “Definitive Edition” brings together the rare and newly discovered 1963 Beatles live recordings in the best possible condition.
