1964 is remembered as the year when the Beatles made their breakthrough onto the world stage. At the beginning of the year, they held a series of performances in Paris, and during that time they received the news that “Dakitai” had taken over the number one spot in the United States. In February, he went to the United States for the first time, and besides the Ed Sullivan Show, he only had two concerts, one in Washington and one at Carnegie Hall. This is said to have been Epstein’s strategy to feed hunger among his fans. It was in August of the same year that they finally went on a US tour. This U.S. tour is positioned as part of their world tour, and before the U.S., the Beatles will be visiting Europe as well as Australia in June. This was the Beatles’ first time in Australia. The Beatles’ first Australian tour was a hectic one, starting in Adelaide, then Melbourne, Sydney, and then Brisbane with a tour of New Zealand in between, with 16 performances held almost non-stop in just half a month. This work includes a complete recording of the Adelaide performance on June 12, 1964, the very first day of this Australian tour. Ringo joined mid-way from Melbourne due to tonsil treatment, and Jimmy Nichol was acting as the drummer for the first half of the tour, including Adelaide, who is included in this work. In the jacket photo, you can see Jimmy Nicole playing the drums behind the front three. The Adelaide performance was recorded by a local radio station, and is a famous sound source that has been popular among enthusiasts for a long time. However, since the source recorded in this work is of a younger generation, it has a wider range than the previous releases, and is the best version with clearer and better sound quality than the previous releases, which were a bit more comfy. It is also noteworthy that the pitch has been adjusted and recorded at accurate speed. The content is simply wonderful. After all, it’s the first day of their first Australian tour. There is a long introduction by the host, who urges the audience to remain calm. It can be seen that the Beatles’ popularity was booming not only in the UK, Europe, and the US, but also here in Australia. The setlist is different from the US tour that follows, and is special. First of all, it is interesting that the first song starts with “I Saw Her Standing There”. It started with a high count just like the record, and the hearts of the Australian fans must have been stolen at once. As early as the second song, “I want to hug you” is being played. In Melbourne on the same tour, it was changed to “You Can’t Do That”, so it can be said that it is very rare to be played in this order. As mentioned above, since Ringo is absent, Jimmy Nicole naturally does not take the vocals, and George sings “Roll Over Beethoven” other than John and Paul. In addition, the concert concludes with a series of cover numbers representing the early days, “Twist And Shout” and “Long Tall Sally,” in which John and Paul recorded their first takes as they were. The second half of the CD includes two songs from their first appearance in Sydney, June 18th, “I Saw Her Standing There” and “You Can’t Do That.” The sound quality of the audience recording is not good, and it is fragmentary, but it shows the enthusiasm of the time, the state of the fans, and above all, the Beatles’ live performance when they first appeared with M Claudel, who was listening to it for the first time. The intro is narrated by a DJ, and the studio version of the song is also recorded at the same time as the live performance in Sydney, so I don’t think it was ever broadcast in this form, but perhaps someone at the radio station tried it out by recording a tape at the venue. It seems that it was twisted. This is the Beatles’ first performance in Sydney. Also includes press conferences in Adelaide and Sydney at the end, as well as interviews with John and Jimmy Nichol. From the Beatles’ first Australian tour, a complete recording of the Adelaide performance on the first day from the low gene tape. It is the definitive sound source for sound quality, pitch adjustment, content, and sound sources that have been known for a long time. Also included are two songs from the first Sydney performance, Adelaide and Sydney’s press conference, and an interview with John and Jimmy Nichol.
