Description
The Beach Boys were the final act at the 1980 Knebworth Festival. Like ZEP the previous year, they also recorded both video and audio. In fact, they even recorded rehearsals with the intention of releasing them. However, no live release was realized (again, the same as ZEP), and it was only in the 21st century that the details were revealed. Both the live album and the video were released at once, but the live video has become a staple of the Beach Boys in the DVD era. In 2012, when the surviving original members gathered for a live performance, the scene of Carl Wilson singing “God Only Knows” was used very effectively from this video for a virtual live performance. Such a classic live video is now out of print. What’s more, the only versions available on YouTube are those uploaded in parts, or versions that are labeled as remastered and HD images but are actually unbearable to watch, making it a serious situation where such a classic cannot be viewed all the way through. So this time, we have the version that was broadcast in Japan on New Year’s Day 2007. Of course, the video itself is the same as the one released at the time, but there are comments by famous people at the opening and closing of the broadcast (although I can’t help but smile at the comment at the end when they mixed up Brian and Mike about the falsetto), and that alone is interesting enough. However, what is particularly noteworthy about this broadcast is the subtitles that introduce each song at the beginning. This is really to the point, and it is wonderful that it is more enjoyable for us Japanese than the original video. Looking at the video again, it seems that Dennis Wilson was drunk on that day, and he drank even more when he was not playing the drums. As proof of this, he gets involved with Mike Love while singing “Surfer Girl”, and it is hilarious to see him make an obviously displeased face when Dennis gets involved with him. Moreover, in the middle of the live performance when Dennis is not playing the drums, support member Bobby Figueroa takes his place, and when he starts playing, the performance becomes solid as soon as he starts playing, which is in stark contrast to Dennis’ drumming, which tends to be drunk and fast. When Dennis returned to the drums in the second half of the concert, he and the other members finally lost their rhythm in “Rock and Roll Music”. It seems that because of these incidents, the live performance never saw the light of day, and instead, the Independence Day live performance in Washington two weeks later was released on VHS at the time. However, compared to the Washington edit, which was biased towards oldies, the Knebworth album has a much more balanced selection of songs, which is a big attraction, and it even includes songs from “KEEPIN’ THE SUMMER ALIVE,” which was the latest album at the time. What’s more, the camera angles are overwhelming, and Al Jardine and Carl Wilson’s performance of singing while looking straight into the camera is amazing. This is the precious Japanese broadcast version of the Beach Boys’ classic live video. Although it was 2007, it is already 15 years ago, and the broadcast is captured in perfect image quality. The opening and closing commentary now makes you feel nostalgic, making this rare broadcast version even more enjoyable than the original live software, so please watch it until the end. Again, the falsetto is Brian Wilson, not Mike Love lol Knebworth House, Knebworth, England 21st June 1980 PRO-SHOT Broadcast Date: 2nd January 2007★Broadcast from 3am on New Year’s Day (74:49) 1.
