Description

The Tartan Hurricane of 1982, when all five of them, Leslie, Eric, Stuart, Alan & Derek, came to Japan. This live album, vacuum-packed with premium sound, is now reissued. This work contains “September 4, 1982: Nippon Budokan.” This year’s reunion and Japan performance was only for one day. Instead (?) two performances were held on this day, one in the evening and one at night. This work is a two-disc set that captures the two performances with a premium sound audience album and a soundboard album. This recording was once unearthed as “REUNION 1982: SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERT” and was highly acclaimed. This time, it is a superb product that has been directly re-released on CD from the original cassette handed over to the recorder himself. Let’s introduce the two performances. [Evening performance: Full audience recording] First up is the evening performance. This is an audience album that fully recorded the entire concert with a wonderful sound. The sound is so amazing. The realistic air is a little different from “sound board”, but the thickness of the core of the performance / singing voice that reaches straight is comparable to line recording. On top of that, the beauty of the “ringing” that colors the core is definitely an audience recording. The air is transparent and clear, and even the fine details are clearly transmitted. Although there is a little chatter in the bass sound, the singing voice that jumps in with a strong voice jumps in with almost no sense of distance, and the feeling that the acoustics of the venue spread behind your head. Although the detailed recording position has been lost, it was probably recorded very close to the PA. Of course, the freshness is ultimate only for the master cassette handed over by the recorder himself. It is not only BAY CITY ROLLERS that is drawn with such a shining clear sound. In fact, the breath of the audience gathered at the site of Nippon Budokan is also sparkling. This might give the impression of a recording full of talking and screaming, but it’s not like that. Of course, there are fierce, yellow squeals, but there are no close voices, and they blend in with the song like a sound effect to liven up the mood, and the precise clapping is sharp and integrated with the rhythm section. The octagonal space is filled with a mood of “I want you to liven up and be happy!”, and the feeling of welcoming the five members of BAY CITY ROLLERS with all my might overflows. It’s a live album like that. The squeals are so yellow… As soon as the five members appear, they scream, and even between songs they scream. Just the three-dimensional effect makes it easy to see where the members are standing and how they are moving. In the chorus of “I Only Want To Be With You”, Leslie points the microphone at him, but it becomes “I only want to be with Kyaah!” (laughs). However, the reason why such voices are pleasant but not annoying is probably because they are far away. There are probably a lot of girls shouting the names of their favorite members at the scene, but they’re not close enough to hear them. It’s a “swell” as a whole. And that “swell” is extremely moving. The sea of cheers after “Bye Bye Baby”, the Western music girls singing every word of the lyrics in “Don’t Let the Music Die”… The promised “S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y night!” is also amazing. [Evening Session: 60-minute broadcast sound board] The “evening session” is up to the fourth song on disc 2. The rest of disc 2 contains the broadcast audio of the “evening session”. It is a radio audio source that has been edited to fit the 60-minute frame for the program, and there are interviews in the middle. The main “evening session” was also wonderful and conveyed the “real 80’s”, but this is also amazing. The super direct feeling is so vivid because of the sound board, and you can clearly hear who is singing every word of the chorus. And here too, the Western music girls on site are very active. Since it’s a broadcast, you can mix it in any way you like, but it’s bigger than the “evening part” of the audience recording (laughs). Normally, radio broadcasts only mix cheers between songs and erase almost everything else. However, in this group, the screams are constant even during the performance, and the whole thing is bright yellow. Moreover, these cheers are not fake, but completely real. There are voices singing the melody among the screams, and when the chorus of each song is reached, the female voice is as strong as Leslie’s. Of course, even between songs, when Leslie says “Konnichiwa”, she screams “Konnichiwa!” and when he says “Hallow!!”, she screams back in hiragana. The mix emphasizes cheers so boldly, so I wonder if they were really happy with the great hospitality of Japan… The Western music girls at Nippon Budokan are definitely treated as the sixth member. Speaking of “Japan and BAY CITY ROLLERS”, the honeymoon relationship is also engraved in the official albums “LIVE IN JAPAN” and “ROLLERWORLD”. However, the former was without the Longmuir brothers, and the latter was without Alan. In contrast, this work features all five of them. You can also listen to plenty of “When Will You Be Mine”, “The Pie”, “My Lisa”, and “Back On The Street”, which you can’t hear even if you put together the two above. It’s because of “the five of them” that the enthusiasm is unique to Japan. This is a vacuum-packed version of those two performances with a special audience and a broadcast soundboard.
