Description
From BLUE OYSTER CULT’s second Japan tour in 20 years in May 1999, the second performance in Roppongi, Tokyo is now available as a super quality audience recording that even the soundboard sound source will make you run away barefoot. ! The second performance in Japan, which many die-hard B.O.C. fans didn’t know about, will be recreated with the finest sound that could be said to be second to none! After the “CLUB NINJA” tour ended in 1986, B.O.C.’s activities stalled due to major changes in musical style and a series of member changes, and they were forced to disband. However, in 1988, original members Albert Bouchard and Alan Rainier rejoined Eric Bloom and Donald Loser, who continued to protect the band, and produced “IMAGINOS,” and B.O.C. We are off to a great start. Although a reunion tour with the original lineup did not materialize, B.O.C. went on to release albums such as their 1994 self-cover work “CULT CLASSICS” and their first new album in 10 years, “HEAVEN FORBID.” The tour continues energetically. In 1999, they held their first Japan tour since the “MIRRORS” tour in 1979. Unfortunately, his visit to Japan was as a guest to commemorate the opening of a certain club in Roppongi, Tokyo, and he did not tour all over the country, so unfortunately he is surprisingly unknown even among his fans. That’s why it’s a surprise to enthusiasts just to say that the live pattern was discovered this time. In this recording, the Roppongi premiere following the Yokota Air Base performance on May 15th is completely recorded using the original DAT master, which is completely unknown even among traders. What is more surprising about this work than the excavation of the sound source itself is the high quality sound quality that even surpasses the sound board as mentioned above. The recording person is the person who worked on “DRAGON HEAD”, which was praised as the best of DIO’s sound sources in Japan, and WHITESNAKE’s “PLEDGE OF VICTORY”, which delighted fans immediately after its release the other day. The sound that this taper has demonstrated to its fullest is not only the visibility and clarity of the sound, but also the closeness of the stage, the direct feeling of the performance, and the powerful sound pressure. (sound quality as expected). This work, which vacuum-packs the atmosphere of the venue and the performances on stage from the opening to the end with the highest realism and sense of existence, is sure to transport listeners to the live venue 12 years ago for about 100 minutes! Listeners will be stunned by the sound quality from the opening, where the members perform a sound check to the theme of “Blade Runner”, which has been the band’s opening theme since the late 1980s. The sounds of the guitar, bass, and drums are as real and vivid as if they were being presented right in front of your eyes, and the keyboard has an exquisite grained beauty in every single note. From the first half of the live performance, “Stairway To The Stars” and “Before The Kiss, A Redcap,” the sound quality is suddenly at its best, and the listener is sure to be stunned and wonder, “Is this really an audience recording?” (Recorded by a person involved) But I don’t think it would be possible to make such a beautiful recording!) Eric and Donald’s playing is as solid as ever, but in this live performance, the drums played by former RAINBOW member Bobby Rondinelli are also wonderful to listen to, giving many B.O.C. classics a solid sharpness and dynamism. Bobby’s drumming in the profound and heavy “Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll” and the groove-filled “E.T.I.” is a must-hear for fans. Although the set list was basically classically oriented, two songs from the then-new album “HEAVEN FORBID” were included: “Harvest Moon” and “See You In Black.” These new songs, which sometimes received a subdued response at live performances overseas, received a positive response at this live performance. In particular, during the guitar solo in the middle of “Harvest Moon,” the audience cheered loudly, as if inspired by Eric and Donald’s great performances. “Joan Crawford,” in which Alan Rainier’s piano plays a flowing melody, is a great listen in the middle of the live performance. The sound quality of this recording shines even more attractively with the song’s intensely theatrical and dramatic feel, overwhelming both the audience and the listener. In addition, the three selected “SECRET TREATIES” numbers, “Career Of Evil”, “Flaming Telepaths”, and “Astronomy”, are all masterpieces. Along with standard songs such as “Burnin’ For You”, “Godzilla” (with bass and drum solo), and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” that will be featured in the second half of the live, the set list is like a live version of the Best of B.O.C. It even gives you a sense of taste. “Godzilla” and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”, which are memorable for Japanese fans, were enthusiastically chanted by the entire venue. The B.O.C. fans who came to see this live show can truly be called “die-hards.” The reactions are endless! The last song “The Red And The Black” also had a festival-like excitement throughout the venue, making you realize how much Japanese B.O.C. fans were looking forward to their live performance. You won’t want to miss hearing Eric say “Goodnight Mina-san!” to the fans at the end! After this, B.O.C. performed shows at the same venue until May 23rd (two performances per day for four days from the 19th to the 22nd), and all of the live performances they performed during their visit to Japan in 1999. We have performed a surprising number of times, with 11 performances. However, as mentioned above, fan awareness was low (partly because the venue was a club with a capacity of 100 people), and almost no one knew about the live performance. The discovery of this high quality sound source can be said to be almost a miracle, and it is no exaggeration to say that although it is a 2-disc set, its richness exceeds the 6-disc set “WAY OF THE CROSS” of the same period live.
