Description

This all-star band of the most skilled studio musicians from New York on the East Coast performed at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978, held over three days, in their heyday. This album contains many unreleased performances from the first day! In addition, this powerful album includes two live tracks from 1977’s “Remarche,” centered around Mainieri and Gadd! This work is a nearly complete recording of the live performance on July 21, 1978, which had only been available to listen to a few songs from the legendary three consecutive Montreux performances, spanning over an hour, and two additional songs from the previous year, December 17, 1977, at The Red Greek Inn in Rochester, New York, by the truly legendary super band “Remarsh” (incidentally, 30 years later, they were reunited in 2008), which existed between the legendary groups “White Elephant” and “Steps,” which fusion fans consider to be the beginning of fusion, and disappeared naturally without leaving a single album! Both songs are captured on the label’s own carefully mastered superb high-quality sound board, making this a treasure trove that will make fusion fans cry! ! Mike Mainieri, the shadow don of New York fusion, is known for his life’s work, Steps (Ahead), and he has always trusted Michael Brecker, his friend Warren Bernhardt, his brother Randy, his old friend Tony Levin, Steve Khan, whom Mainieri trusted at the time, and Steve Jordan, whose drums are so cool that I’ve come to realize their true abilities after listening to this live performance. This special live performance in Montreux in 1978 was a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a dream all-star band of members representing the East. Mike’s cool and colorful vibraphone sounds are just so comfortable throughout the entire performance, and his hot solos, which are always hot, make you feel like he’s really into it. And as for Michael from this period, he’s so godlike that it’s rude to say too much about him. It’s just overwhelming, I’m speechless! His crying tenor in “I’m Sorry” is the best! And in the 1977 live performance by the legendary Remarche, you can hear the title track from Mainieri’s masterpiece “Love Play” that was released just after, and hear Gadd’s drum solo explode, a performance that is a hundred times more exciting than the studio recording!!
