Description
The performances at Frankfurt, Germany on June 6, 1997 and Summer Jazz Days in Warsaw on June 19, 1998 were recorded on a stereo soundboard. Unlike the thin sound image that is common on boards, this is an official, superb sound quality with a sense of realism that easily surpasses all previously released items! This was a period in which Holdsworth experimented with various rhythm sections (“What To Soon” was released in 1996, and “The 160 Men of Tain” in 1999), but it’s no exaggeration to say that his collaboration with the two West Coast session rhythm section members who also participated in “The 160 Men of Tain” is his best fit to date. The incredible combination of Gary Novak, who backed George Benson, Chick Corea, Bob Berg, and Alanis Morissette in the 90s, and the late Dave Carpenter, who was active with Boz Scaggs, Mike Stern, Lee Ritenour, Peter Erskine, and others, is explosive throughout the album. Gary’s powerful yet sensitive rhythm work, Dave’s exquisite backing that makes good use of tension and fast, melodic solos that can be heard at key points make this a must-listen for fans and non-fans alike! With this best lineup, Holdsworth is more flawless than ever. The set list includes Material Real and Water On the Brain Pt. 2 from the 1983 release “Road Games,” Letters Of Marque from the 1985 release “I.O.U.”, Funnels and Looking Glass from the 1986 release “Atavachron,” Sixteen Men Of Tain, which will be included in the 2000 release “The Sixteen Men of Tain,” 0274, Above & Below, Texas, and Alan Pasqua’s Proto Cosmos, making for a well-balanced set that will satisfy fans! As a trio, this is the ultimate release that will allow you to enjoy Holdsworth’s most exciting performance in history! H.R.
