Description
On June 27, 1982, Towson released “i.o.u.”, which can be said to be his first leader album (though there was “Velvet Darkness” released by CTI), and recorded a performance at Odd Fellows Hall with a superb audience recording. The separation of the instruments, the balance between the audience and the band sound, etc. are all ideal sound images, allowing you to fully enjoy a unique performance. The slow pitch has also been adjusted to just the right level. (Unfortunately, there are a few seconds of cuts between White Line – Alone Tonight and Out From Under – Was There?) As for recordings from this period, there are also disc 2 of the previously released “original i.o.u. live tracks” (June, Hartford, Connecticut performance), the Roxy performance in West Hollywood on April 29 (guest Eddie Van Halen, bass Jeff Berlin), and Wolf & Squirrel’s Country Club on May 11, but since there are only a few, including unpackaged ones, this release will be a delight for fans. The set list is almost the same and there is no change, but the four members who were shifted from 1982 perform a wonderfully modulated ensemble (until the latter half of 1981, it was a trio without Paul Williams), and all 8 tracks are worth listening to without any slack throughout the entire 73 minutes. Anyway, the high-speed battle between Alan and Gary in Was There?, which starts with Alan’s amazing improvisation, is a must-listen! This is the long-awaited item that packages Holdsworth’s most fulfilling period in history, when he began to attract attention as a musician’s musician, with ideal sound quality!
