Description

This is a surprising excavated recording from the production session of ALCATRAZZ’s historic first album “NO PALORE FROM ROCK’N’ROLL” (this name was actually part of the jacket design, the official title was “ALCATRAZZ”) released in 1983! After leaving M.S.G., Graham Bonnet planned to start a band like RAINBOW to realize his own musical activities. He met former NEW ENGLAND members Jimmy Waldo (key) and Gary Shea (bass) to solidify the foundation of the band, and then recruited former STEELER member Yngwie Malmsteen to play guitar, which was the key to the band, and Jean Juvena, who had a career with ALICE COOPER, etc., as a result of an audition, to play drums. He started full-scale band activities and album production. This album is a demo recording from the production stage of this album. In addition to nine backing instrumental demos, five more demos with Graham singing are included, all of which are recorded on a wonderful soundboard source that sets it apart from ordinary excavated demo tapes! The instrumental demo of “NO PALORE FROM ROCK’N’ROLL” was released once a few years ago as a 10-song set, and fans were very surprised by the tunes and content of each song, which were very different from the finished version. When comparing the previously released version with the master on which this album was based, the composition and arrangement of the songs are almost the same, but the order of the songs is completely different, and “Incubus”, which was completed as a guitar instrumental by Yngwie on the album, is not included. Furthermore, the pitch, which was about a semitone faster overall, is almost the same as the finished album, and there are many differences, which will surprise fans again. In particular, the keyboard impression of “Island In The Sun” and “Starcarr Lane” is different when listening to the take of this work, and you can clearly and accurately grasp the work of Jimmy Waldo, who is said to have had a large input on this song. And the most important and decisive difference is that you can hear Graham’s vocals, which were not heard in the previous demo sound source, in a total of five songs, “General Hospital”, “Kree Nakoorie”, “Jet To Jet”, “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and “Island In The Sun”! In these five songs, not only the backing but also Graham’s singing is closer to the finished version compared to the instrumental demo, and it feels more like a rough mix before completion than a demo. Nevertheless, in “General Hospital”, the opening part of the song is close to the instrumental demo, and you can clearly feel the difference in the mix of the guitar and keyboard at first listen. In addition, the heavy tone with strong bass overall is also impressive. To be honest, the difference is clear compared to the finished version, which had a lightweight, empty sound. In particular, “Jet To Jet” is very powerful, and you can reaffirm the original charm of this song. If the album had been finished with this more powerful and aggressive sound, it is possible that the evaluation of this work would have been different. It is also very interesting that the vocal demos and instrumental demos are arranged alternately, and the order of the songs in the latter half of the recording is the same as the finished version. Perhaps the producer and band members, including Graham, were planning the final concept of the album while listening to this master take. By listening to this work while imagining Graham and others working in the studio, you will be able to find a different kind of fun in the finished version. This is an excellent demo take!
